how many people in here used to be in a computer field(programming,etc).....Do you guys love you job now?...
To it I'd add the desire to work under a collective bargaining agreement something that's virtually nonexistent in the engineering field. The older I get, the more I value not being able to be terminated "at will" but rather by seniority.[/quote']Lucky you, being in CA. As a native southern CA girl, I'm a bit frustrated that here in the midwest where I am now living, this is non-existent for RNs. It is my wish that nurses understand the power they yield simply by their sheer numbers and begin demanding change for the better both for our patients and our safety!!
Best wishes!!
I have my first bachelors in CS and a Masters in IS, now a second bachelors in nursing. I worked for 8 years as a programmer, mostly in healthcare. Now I work for a university doing nursing informatics research and I also work per diem at a pediatric SNF. I love being a nurse but I'm glad that I haven't given up all my CS skills, being able to combine the 2 fields has been great for me. I'm finishing my MPH this spring and I hope to start a PhD in nursing informatics in the fall.
I am still working in IT, and have a Bachelors in Information Systems. Been working in IT for 18 years. Just finished my first year of nursing school, and can't wait until December when I can sit for my NCLEX-RN.
Because of all the outsourcing etc, I now have a new saying
"They can't send all the sick people to India". So therefore our jobs in nursing should be a little more secure.

A lot of tech types thinking the same thing, it appears.
Now we just have to pressure our legislature to prevent the importation of the cheap labor.
I am one of recently NCLEX passers who used to be a computer analyst/programmer... Well, I love nursing now 'coz to work in a Hospital used to be my childhood dream (I don't know why did I ever entered computer science)... Lately, I've been hearing about this nursing informatics type of job and I don't know where to start... it's as if I wanted to try nursing informatics so as not to waste my former profession... however, it seems to me that nursing informatics is not yet existent in the Philippines...

count me in... I am both a graduate of BS Math major in Computer Science and BS NUrsing.... now I don't know where to begin... is being a graduate of both courses enough for me to work as a nurse informaticist just now?
I recently passed NCLEX california and heard about this nursing informatics stuff.... but i cant find any nurse informatics job here in the philippines... perhaps it still doesn't exist here...
Former systems analyst for huge top fortune 500 company. Did it for 5 years. Have degree in computer science and master's in technical ed. But realized the corporate world is definitely NOT for me. I like nursing so much better. Yes it's demanding and hard but it's more flexible and at the end of the day, you can really see you have made a difference. You really can rarely see you make a difference when you are just a minor little cog in the big corporate machine.
I used to be a computer programmer and was bored sitting in a cubicle staring at a computer all day. But nursing isn't what I expected, as there is too much work to do, I work with abusive patients and coworkers, and with the addition of computers I am expected to somehow find time to spend much of the shift on the computer documenting. I wish I'd gone into some other work that also pays well and is rewarding but not people-intensive - something like getting involved in the green movement.

If the government plan to link healthcare providers with electronic medical records, you will have more job security than you can handle.
