Completely enraged!!!

Nursing Students General Students

Published

This is kind of long, but somewhat-kinda entertaining.

I start my first quarter of nursing school on Monday. The last thing I needed to check off my list of school to-do's was to buy scrubs from the school bookstore. I am required to buy two sets from my school's bookstore per the program's instructions and nowhere else (they are sent to the school with the nursing student patches already on them).

Now, I have spent a few years working retail/customer service and have done a damn good job of it, so I get really offended when I'm the customer who is treated like crap from those in similar positions.

I enter the bookstore. I ask a lady where the scrubs were, which she showed me. The tops and pants are each individually wrapped. I look to my left and see just a few tops and pants hanging labeled as "samples." I quickly gathered that "Oh, they have samples here, this obviously means that I try these on to find my size." However, I wanted to see if they had some sort of fitting room or what have you, so I find a guy and ask about trying them on. He says, "Oh, you can't try those on. You can only hold them up to your body to see if they fit."

...okay. I get closer to the sample scrubs and quickly realize that that doesn't make much sense as they're dirty and appeared to have been tried on by God knows how many people. There is makeup all over the v-neck necklines. This kind off grosses me out and seems unsanitary to me (they could at least clean them regularly). I then ask a different guy, "Do you guys have some sort of sizing chart related to these scrubs I can look at?" He says, "Ummm...I don't think - well, I don't know. Let me ask."

He goes to ask who I recognized by her voice to be the lady that first showed me where the scrubs were. All of a sudden, I hear her from accross the store in the snottiest tone, "Um, that's why they're ON THE RACK." I hear her walk with him to find me. It is getting closer to closing time for them (2 PM on Saturdays) and I'm getting frustrated because I could have been over and done with the situation by now if things were handled better...

Her: They're on the rack, right in front of you.

Me: I know where they are. What I asked was if there was some sort of sizing chart.

Her: *laughs slightly* Uh, again, they're on the rack...we don't have a sizing chart.

Me: Well the first guy I talked to said I couldn't try them on, that I could only hold them up to me.

Her: *calls loudly to the guy somewhere in the store so he could hear* Did you hear that? She can try them on, either over her clothes or in the restroom so long as we hold her wallet. *looks back to me, talking in a snotty tone again* Except, we're closed. In fact, it's a little after closing, and we would all like to go home now, you know.

Then, the lady, both guys that helped me and another guy all looked at me together CHUCKLING before they just walk away from me. Like I have two ******* heads and am completely incompetent with no active brain waves. It just wasn't appropriate. It should not take an act of congress to find the right size scrubs!!! This is how they treat students? I'm new to this school. Nothing says "Welcome!" than this behavior. I just left empty handed. It was a wasted trip anyway. From just eyeballing it, it seems like the only size that will fit me is an extra small. Even the small appears huge. But of course, they don't have those sizes in and they have them on order...

I felt embarassed and humiliated. No customer should ever feel that way.

I'm really crossing my fingers and hoping that this is not a bad omen/a reflection if what is to come of my nursing program...

Jeez it sure can get rough here on AN. I think the OP has a right to vent and be upset. Face it, if it were either one us that have already earned that all-precious nursing license being so poorly treated, we'd be ticked too. I've seen plenty of people get ripped to shreds on here for disturbing someone's vent. Let's give her the same courtesy and let her rip one. After all, a lot of us are still students, too. Vent on, OP.

I think most people are just trying to help by encouraging the OP to keep things in perspective. Being in healthcare doesn't take away our right to expect respect, but at the same time you DO have to develop somewhat go a thick skin or you won't survive in a field where our coworkers are burnt out and our patients are sick and miserable. And then there are people who are rude regardless of their circumstances.

I agree though...regardless of what's going on behind the scenes or your career path, we have a right to vent when something affects us.

Well anyway, I'd really like to thank the majority of you who saw this post at face value for what it was. I appreciate those of you being respectful of my vent and for not turning it into something more than it needed to be. :)

I used to work in fast food as a teenager and young adult, and my employers focused greatly on delivering excellent customer service. I believe in basic courtesy and yes, I get irritated when supposed adults seem to default to rudeness. I don't necessarily take it *personally* so much as I feel disappointed in people in general. I can work with all types of personalities and I'm not so naive as to be surprised that this sort of rudeness and extreme lack of basic courtesy happen.

OP, I would vent about this, too. I do think you should put in a complaint. These people are representing their employer in a highly negative way, no matter how you look at it.

Maybe someone else came up with this in the past 4 pages.

If you know the brand and model number of the scrubs, you can then go online and find the sizing charts.

Also, you could go to a uniform store, select the right sizes, then either buy the pants there & the tops from the bookstore, or at least buy a stethoscope or something from the uniform shop to repay them for having uniforms available to try on.

I think the factor that contributed to me taking it more personal than usual is that it wasn't just any retail store. It wasn't Barnes and Noble or Borders. It was my brand new campus' book store. I've never taken any classes here before.

This campus is bigger and nicer than my old one. I was one out of 18 people chosen for their program, which I take with great honor. I was ecstatic walking into the bookstore, expecting to walk away with the coveted nursing school scrubs. I was so overwhelmingly excited that I worked so hard and finally got to the place where I could be one of those students with such a priviledge.

Then they metaphorically spat all over that enthusiasm. I went from practically skipping into the store to leaving in shock and anger. Sure, it's true that no one can make you feel inferior without your consent, but I never expected that scenario to happen. I imagined it to be vastly different.

Anyway, it's done now. I'll formally complain to the manager and move on, which was the original plan anyway. Right now I'm a bit concerned with soothing these night-before-nursing-school-starts jitters! ;)

I agree that if that is all it takes to "completely enrage" you, you might have a hard time being a nurse. Also, I agree that you do not want your scrubs too small. They need to fit loose so you can bend, etc., without them pulling down in the back.

I mean no disrespect, but I can't wait to prove you and the others with the same sentiments all wrong. :)

I'm gonna be awesome-sauce and kick this program's butt.

thats what i like about this board. make a post about being completely enraged and no less than 3 members try to make you even angrier :cheeky:

Yeah, I'm tired of looking at other people's undies & pulling their scrub tops down as I walk past them.

Graduating nursing student here! Hang in there. The first few weeks of a program (and a new school) can be tough. You will survive! I started nursing school three years ago, and I felt that I was thrown into it, but just like a baby needs to learn to walk, you are learning a whole new way of life. These are transitions that we have to go through, but I know that you'll look back one day and seeing who you've become you'll be so proud!

I feel that many other aspects if college ( bookstore, registrar, cafeteria...) were distractors. I could list major issues I've had with many of these adjunct services, but that just takes my focus away from my goal. So while they are wrong, I make a conscious decision to try to focus on other, more relevant aspects if my schooling, like why in the world does every adjunct define a Focus Note differently.

Good luck. If you need anything, feel free to PM me!

Well that sure ignited....:)

OK.....take a deep breaths.....((HUGS)). I see now what made you feel so vulnerable and abused. I just heard you audibly take a breath right here....

OP....it is clear that these employees we rude and unkind. There are people like this everywhere and unfortunately in nursing you will see these same people with illness that will add a special edge to their incorrigible behavior.

I am so sorry these two slugs spat ll over your enthusiasm for it is exciting to finally be one step closer to your goal. My experiences with bookstores has NEVER been a positive one....for they have a captive audience...you MUST purchase from them therefore customer service isn't in the equation. You have to buy two regardless of how rude they are you must buy 2.

It sounds to me that your program has pride and clearly wants a top notch program. I would let the school know of this debacle for I am sure that they do not want this negative representation. I would also let the school and the maker of the uniforms knows for it is also a brand representation. I am so sorry that they sucked the air out of your lungs.....but the world is full of these kinds of people.

My favourite quote is Eleanor Roosevelt's ....No one can make you feel inferior without your consent. For it is completely true. Don't give your power to anyone.

((HUGS)) Nursing school is tough...it is...especially in dealing with the general public. Rest assured.....that many have done it before so it is do able for you as well. I think that anything worth having is worth working for.....it will be ok. Nursing school is difficult for you need to learn a whole new thinking process...but listen to your heart...don't let the naysayers get into your head.

((HUGS)) GOOD LUCK ON YOUR FIRST DAY!!!!!
