Come and get it!

My kids are middle school but really irresponsible. I have lots of kids on ADHD meds and I refuse to turn those over to anyone except a parent. I send a letter home about 2 weeks before the end of school and I give the parents a date and specific time for a deadline for pick up. It states in the letter that med will be destroyed if not picked up by said deadline.

I hate to be so tough. However, many of my students have drug problems and would try to sell or share just about anything. I a not taking the chance, I stay strictly to our policy which states only a parent can pick up,

The end of this school year has arrived! Thank you for your help in supplying medication for your child throughout the school year.

For your convenience, a long-term medication form for the upcoming school year is attached to this notice. If your child will be on long-term medication next school year, this form must be completed by your physician and signed by you before medication can be given. This form is required at ALL SWISD schools.

PLEASE MAKE ARRANGEMENTS TO PICK UP YOUR CHILD'S MEDICATION BY __________________. ANY MEDICATION LEFT IN THE CLINIC AFTER THIS DATE WILL BE DISPOSED OF. To ensure the safety of your student, as well as others, this medication will not be sent home with your child.

What method do you use to get students to take home meds at the end of the year?

I have high school age kids- some of them I trust to take home their meds (benadryl, epi pens, inhalers). There are some others that I know I would need to give to the parent (one has ativan and the other have vicodin), and I'll get the girl that gives the daily meds to double count those with me and sign off also. I know the elem. age nurses have the parents come get the meds, but it's highly unlikely I'll see most of these parents.

Do you have a letter you send home? If so, can you C&P and let me see it? I'm also thinking of having the ones who do take their meds home sign a waiver saying it'll go straight home, they won't use it unless needed and won't distribute the meds (even though I trust some of them, I'm not dumb).

not sure this will do you any good , legally. if they are under 18 they arent legally able to sign a contract.....

We usually send out a letter for parents to pick up their kids meds. I also send home a new med order form for the next school year. I usually write on the letter that if meds aren't picked up by june ______ all meds will be disgarded. This usually puts fire under their seats to pick up the meds also. It is policy to disgard any meds that have not been picked up my the end of the school year.

I dispose of any meds left over at the end of the year. I send a letter home a couple weeks before school ends telling them they need to be picked up or they will be destroyed. No one comes to pick up a couple prn tylenol/advil but I do wish they would pick up the percocet and imitrex. Usually I just end up discarding them, though.
