I'm a new grad RN( just passed boards a couple weeks ago). I went to school at Xavier University-graduated with my BSN in may, and relocated back to the columbus area.....one problem.....there is no new grad rn jobs
I started my job search back in JANUARY!literally.....I applied to the OSU residency for new grads----didnt get it b/c i didnt have the right "experience" - so i kept searching.....i have expanded my search to all of the major health care systems in the area including Ohiohealth, Mount Carmel and Nationwide Childrens. yep-not even had a call back..... I have had my resume re done 3 times.....twice by a HR specialist and former nurse recruiter.....
I spend all of my days-literally appyling for jobs...tweaking my resume and objective here and there and trying to network. I have even made leads with some of the nurse recruiters....some helpful.....some not. I even had a recruiter tell me "tough market, good luck" seriously though? you have got to be kidding me......I am a bachelors prepared RN, and cannot get a job within the hospital to gain essential bedside experience.
Im getting very very discouraged, being forced with the idea of relocating, and moving very far away from my family, friends and home yet once again. Not sure what I should do. Excess school bills are rolling in and im unemployed.....
I heard the other day that Columbus, OH is one of the worst cities in trying for trying to get a RN job. I am defiantly experiencing this. and i realize I am not the only new grad not getting hired......but i just dont know what to do anymore.....I'm really feeling helpless and discouraged to why did I even become a nurse in the first place. I always heard the saying that nurses always have jobs and theres a nursing shortage-that is a big fat lie.........if this was the case.....I probably would of went into another helping profession i.e. social work or something if I would of known there was going to be such resistance to hiring new graduate RNs across the country.
thanks for listening to me complain....but sometimes when i try to explain to my family what is going on.....they just dont understand......
No, don't just show up. Somebody once gave me this piece of advice: If you want to find the name of the nurse manager of a unit, call the hospital, say you were a patient on that unit and want to know who to address your Thank You letter to. From what I hear, it works like a charm!
lol ok, i was like confused...i figured it would be a nusience and annoying to have a random nurse show up and give someone their resume. but that sounds like a good little trick, thank you! :-)
True, Cleveland Clinic is not the end-all of nursing But, the system is the largest employer of nurses. UH is the second largest. If those two aren't hiring, it makes a huge dent in the number of total available nursing positions. Not saying that an LTC or LTAC isn't worthy at all....just that there are now so many more people trying for those positions. It's not pretty.
Ohio is tough right now, just like everywhere else I had to work at a SNF for a year and a half to get experience to get into a hospital. Good luck with your search!!
I know that Mercy Medical and Aultman in Canton are hiring new grads. I know its about two hours from Columbus, but it's not a bad place to live and the hospitals are decent. Then you have Akron that has three major hospital systems right there (though i know Akron General is probably not the best bet). The jobs are there, but relocating might just have to be an option to get some experience.
I am a LPN that just graduated with my RN last August. It has taken me until now to just get my foot in the door for a hospital, and as an LPN I'm not from Ohio and had travel and hospital experience. I also worked for a subacute/high acquity LTAC. Right now there are tons of jobs at OSU, someone told me that when you do the online application click that you at least have 1yr exp or it kicks the application out. Also check out Regency Hospital or Select Speciality Hospital. They will help you get your yr exp and get a foot in the door and offer good training even up to learning how to put in PICC lines. It does help to know someone, but just keep trying. Another idea is possibly trying Adena Hosp in Chillocothe I did my clinical there it's a 30 minute drive but it's a really nice hospital now as big as the Columbus ones but again exp it what you need, and year should do it. I have heard you cannot get into OSU unless you know someone or graduated from their program. I applied to 7-10 jobs a month for 4 years and my applications got rejected instantly every time. I finally became good friends with a girl that worked there, put down her name on my application, had her mention me to her nurse manager, and BAM. Hired. Mind you this is a PCA position (I am a nursing student in Columbus) but it really is about WHO you know. Keep trying to network! I got my first health care job every because of two nurses I served while a waitress!
I had the same problem in Columbus 3 years ago. I looked and looked for a year before moving in Dayton. There are not nearly as many jobs now as there were then but it might be worth a try. Good luck!

It has to be over 250 applications to every hospital, LTC, etc. I even know the director of nursing at OSU and they can't help me. Ohio is great palce for education but awful for new grads. What program did you graduate from?? I know a lot of people that graduated from Columbus area schools in May and they all have jobs in Columbus now.
