Thought it'd be a good idea to start a thread for prospective applicants to Columbia's ETP program starting Summer 2011. I was going to apply last year but passed on it in favor of working for another year.
Applications are due November 15, 2010! Right around the corner ...
Anyone else preparing for this also?
my cousin's husband's cousin is at columbia for the ped's NP.. I asked her a lot of questions and here are her replies, I thought this would be helpful for all of us!
"I chose Columbia's program because of the time table as you explained. I didn't want to spend a lot of time getting the RN because I knew I probably wouldn't work as an RN very much while in the Master's. I wanted to be full time.
The first year is a lot of units and you are definitely busy but I think it is totally do-able. Some classes are more difficult than others. The first summer you are basically working for the full week but I still had time to explore with friends. I'd say not to compare it to your past school experience except to give you confidence that you can complete the year. Motivation and focus in the first year definitely push you to get through the learning process.
I think living on campus the first year is a good way to go. You can meet a lot of people and develop good relationships. Also, you are on campus most days so the convenience saves time and money. I didn't get into the campus housing and lived in the Washington Heights neighborhood near campus. This is not a great area. It's not really a place to explore. Safety is not great unless you are near the hospital and the campus buildings. That said, a lot of students live in the area. The campus is above Harlem and away from the parts of the city I like.
The conditions of the dorms are decent. The rooms are small but so is the rest of Manhattan living. I think the kitchen was recently redone but I don't know how much it is used. The bathrooms are community. Every other floors the bathrooms are co-ed and I think that's a weird concept. The dorms are shared between first year med students and nursing students. I've heard that the towers people live in are more like apartments with roommates. I don't know if students live in them the first year. The dorms have a cafeteria and a meal plan. There is a gym and study rooms. It's across the street from where classes are. The campus buildings are really safe because Columbia ID is required and security personnel are outside each building.
If you can make the open house weekend, I really recommend seeing the campus.
I forgot to mention the other reasons I chose Columbia. The pediatric program was ranked and I knew it was a good program. Also, in California the programs weren't training to be nurse practitioners and I knew I wanted an outpatient experience. I applied to three on the east coast. I'm really happy I came to Columbia because I'm happy with my experience and I love NYC."
Hi Everyone! Congrats to all of us!! I'm accepted as the psych NP and I am planning on taking the trip back east for visiting day! Anyone else in for psych and have any info?
Hi Britttrip! There are a few of us psych people showing up -- where else are you looking? :-) I suppose we'll meet on visiting day! I'm trying to find out more about the master's portion of the psych route -- haven't found out much yet.
I also live in NYC if anybody has any questions!!

Hi Britt!
I was also accepted for the psych NP track (as you may have guess from my name ), and will be at admit/visit day. I'm coming all the way from CA, so it will be a bit of a trek, but I'm sure it will be fun! I think we'll get more info mailed to us soon with details, etc...can't wait!
Tanya
congrats to everyone who's been accepted :) also got in for peds NP! still waiting on yale... anybody else in the same situation?
Hi Ayu -
Same boat here - also waiting in Yale (and UCSF and OHSU). I'm for psych though, not peds. I wish all the schools told us at once, it would make life soooo much easier! When did you go out to interview at Yale (or were you one of the unlucky interviewees who was snowed out and had to do a phone interview)? I went on 1/21 - maybe we crossed paths!

Congrats, Hopkins!I'm so torn. Anyone have any input on Columbia vs. Hopkins????
C.
Hey Cartwheel,
I really liked Hopkins too but I havent heard back yet. (Have you??)
So here are my thoughts on Columbia vs. Hopkins:
1) Hopkins ranks really well overall (its like 4th in the country, compared to Columbia which ranks 20th)- but I think this is because they have a strong BSN program, and they have a strong community health program.
2) It does not, however, rank that well for FNP which what I applied for, and ultimately, is what I am the most interested in -- while Columbia ranks #7 for FNP.
3) Hopkins is maaad expensive -- look at the price per credit at Hopkins vs. Columbia -- there is at least a $200 difference.
Those are my thoughts for now... best of luck in your decision!
Congratulations again to everyone that was accepted! For those of you who weren't, don't be discouraged. I would have never been able to guess at the beginning of the process which schools I would have been accepted/waitlisted/rejected from. It was a complete surprise to me, and I feel like there are people on this forum who were more than qualified for Columbia. Keep trying!!!
I'm still waiting to hear from some schools in Boston, but Columbia is one of my top choices. If I choose Columbia, I will be moving from New Hampshire and I've never lived in a large city. What areas do people typically live in (that are safe)? What is the best resource to find an affordable apartment (if that even exists in NYC)? I will hopefully be making the trip down on March 4th, as well, and look forward to meeting those that can attend!
everyone seems to be some what concerned about housing and stuff.. sooo, while i was an undergrad, (i live in the city by the way) i got my real estate broker license for "fun" and one of the best no-fee rentals i came across was croman realty, or 9300realty.com - they definitely had some of the nicest rentals with no fees, and most/all rentals had hardwood flooring with exposed brickwalls (really pretty) and newly funished bathrooms etc etc... HOWEVER this landlord may be somewhat difficult at times to work with...
