Thought it'd be a good idea to start a thread for prospective applicants to Columbia's ETP program starting Summer 2011. I was going to apply last year but passed on it in favor of working for another year.
Applications are due November 15, 2010! Right around the corner ...
Anyone else preparing for this also?
@WilliamsRower - thank you SO much for the information. It definitely sounds like the Upper West Side is the area to look in!!! If I choose Columbia, I would be moving with my boyfriend and we were even thinking a studio might not be a bad idea. Looking forward to meeting everyone on the 4th!
Kerry and other waitlist folks, farful is correct. Midwifery and Anesthesia set their cohorts and (supposedly) don't accept off the waitlist. That said, people do come off the waitlist. If you have questions about timing I'd call the office, they have the most up to date info on that and ask. They are human and realize everyone is on edge just wants to know.As far as I know, Anesthesia also doesn't let anyone switch into their program from the general ETP class. Even if a spot opens up I believe the ETP student has to withdraw from their masters spot and then apply again to get into the anesthesia program. Not really as crazy as it sounds because anesthesia requires all students to do a "step out" year or two in ICU. It's required work experience by the licensing board.
As for midwifery, they may accept a current student if someone drops out of the set midwifery cohort (it happens). They make you apply though with another essay to the midwifery program director as well as a few other steps having to do with birth experience, meetings etc. I hope this is not discouraging because...where there is a will, there is a way!
Kerry, check out the neonatal requirements on the website. Not sure if you are aware but neonatal is another program that requires "step out" NICU work. Although, I have to say...in my clinicals NICU is absolutely fascinating. I saw a 23 week preemie the other day. Amazing.
Hey cu1234 I was just wondering, as a current student, if you could tell me when the BSN is awarded. Are both the BSN and MSN awarded at the end? or do you get the BSN at the end of pre-licensure so you can take a step-out year? Thanks!

not cu1234, but the BSN is awarded after the 1st year. There's a White Coat ceremony in May (this year for us, next year for you guys) and the NP degree is awarded when your particular program is over. I'm in Acute so if I go straight through, I get my degree in Feb 2013. The Women's Health track is shorter so they get their degree in August 2012.
Re: Sumnboutme
Hi! I'll be starting the acute care ETP track for 2011, and you said you will be graduating feb 2013. Did you start in 2010? and Are you doing the Acute care part time? Also, do most ACNP work in emergency rooms? Is it the same as critical care?? How do you like the track so far??
Lastly, not to sound money driven, b/c I'm truly not, but do ACNP on average get a higher salary than General NP? why is that? if that is true? just wondering why some specialties get a higher salary? Is it bc the masters take a longer time to complete? I'm also thinking of switching into psych NP..
Thanks!!
Hi everybody!
So I recently got accepted to Columbia's ETP program, however I did not get accepted into the Anesthesia portion for the MSN. I was curious if anybody has any advice, has previously encountered this or has any information about what paths are available if I wanted to continue at Columbia because my heart is set on becoming a Nurse Anesthetist and the thought of turning down Columbia just feels so wrong.

Do the ETP at Columbia and then apply to a Masters (or post-masters program if you do another MSN segment at Columbia) in Nurse Anesthesia, there are a ton of schools that have them (although they are very competitive).
Thanks for the advice! Have you had any experience with this? It's just a difficult decision because I have been accepted to several other schools and I've heard that most schools take preference for their own nursing students when considering Anesthesia applicants. I guess my main question when picking my path is would my application look more competitive with more experience or an additional masters with a little less experience?? Unfortunately, Columbia's information online about this program isn't very informative so anyone with any knowledge on the subject would be very appreciated.
Hi everyone! I have been reading this discussion the last week and it has been really helpful... so thanks! I feel stressed out ... things are coming up so soon! I got accepted into the FNP track... so I am very excited and nervous. I have been living and volunteering in rural Guatemala for the last three years... so New York would be quite a change...It seems like so fast to wrap up my life and work here and move to New York, but I am so excited to start school now. Does anyone know of where to look for bigger scholarships that would cover more than just a couple thousand dollars? I have really no money now, and would like to have the least student loans as possible as my goal is to move back to Guatemala after school. Also, can any former students maybe tell me how useful the accepted students info day is? We havent' recieved any information about it, and I want to know if it is worth it to fly back from Guatemala to go to that session. And I probably need to make fight reservations soon!
Thanks!
Tanya - dogs are okay in a lot of buildings. You just have to make sure when you're looking up on craigslist or streeteasy (streeteasy is better!) that it says pets allowed. :) If you're unsure you can just call and ask the landlord.
For people who are looking at broker/no broker, broker fees SUCK but brokers can help you if you're really clueless about where to look. I would recommend trying to find no-fee listings if you can. Streeteasy and craigslist both mention if they are fee or no-fee.
Space is expensive in NY (obviously) so expect to get cozy! Living in a studio is not so bad -- and living in a studio with your boyfriend is even better. And don't be surprised if kitchens are tiny!
I also moved from CA -- If you don't have a ton of your own nice furniture then I would suggest selling some or leaving it and buying furniture here. There is an Ikea and a Target here in the city, and I have bought almost all of my furniture on craigslist for super cheap. If you're really on a budget, then that's the way to go! People are always looking to get rid of furniture, and often times you can find pretty nice stuff for very reasonable prices.
As for bed bugs -- yes, they are a problem, yes they exist -- but the best way to avoid them is to be careful about the furniture you are buying on craigslist (as someone else mentioned) and check with the landlord before you move in to see if they have been a problem in that building. Apparently my building has had a few issues but I have never personally had a problem. Luckily, there ARE ways to get rid of them if you end up getting them. Furthermore, I work for a woman now who keeps this powdery stuff around the apartment as a preventative measure. And not having a car isn't so bad! I do lots of reading and music listening on subways if I need to go anywhere far. :)

Thanks for the info Sumnboutme! Bed bugs?! What do you do to get rid of them? or is that just something you have to live with out there? yikes!
