Columbia University ETP 2011

Published

Thought it'd be a good idea to start a thread for prospective applicants to Columbia's ETP program starting Summer 2011. I was going to apply last year but passed on it in favor of working for another year.

Applications are due November 15, 2010! Right around the corner ...

Anyone else preparing for this also? :clown:

Not sure what APU is but I actually did apply to USD and got invited for interviews this week - I actually contacted them today and rescinded my interview RSVP after receiving Columbia's acceptance. USD's program doesn't allow you to graduate as an NP and you can't specialize during the program - you graduate with a general MSN and can take further coursework to get a specialty certificate and be classified as an NP, but it made more sense for me to select a program that is all-encompassing and unfortunately USD, as close as it is, isn't that :crying2:. What about you? Did you apply to USD?

Hi Lovely-

I'm shocked you didn't get accepted - you definitely sound more than qualified! I was accepted into the Adult Psych NP program and my stats are very similar to yours: 3.7 undergrad psych degree (my only degree), 4.0 prerequisites, but on the GRE I got 1340 and 5.5 writing. I have a 5 year research background working in psychiatric research with schizophrenia patients, and I also think it helped that I lead a student club for a year and tutor microbiology and physiology. But your stats sound amazing and I'm shocked that with all those qualifications and even a degree from Columbia that you were not offered admission. Don't give up though, there are a ton of great schools out there and if nursing is in your heart, it will happen for you when the time is right (sorry probably sounds super corny but I truly believe it!).

thank you, all nurses!

i got the admissions email this morning but in my slumber i didn't realize what it was (i was expecting something from jose). just now i was checking this thread when i saw everyone's posts about the email so i went back through my emails ---> accepted for women's health np. so excited!

congrats to everyone!

i got into acute care NP too. can't wait to meet everyone in just a few months :)

I didn't get in either... not even waitlisted! I applied to the pediatric NP track and am really bummed. I thought my GRE score may have inhibited me as well, though I contacted the school early on to ask if I should retake it (well before the deadline, and they said my score was essentially good enough- it met the minimum average). I had an 1140 with a 5 on the writing. My GPA from a top 10 liberal arts school was a 3.25 (unfortunately, one grade from a study abroad semester brought my GPA down SIGNIFICANTLY). I have had many interesting experiences/extracurriculars, strong recommendations, and what i thought was a strong essay. I have been accepted to Emory's ABSN/MSN program, and have had interviews at Yale and Duke, and although the cost of attending Columbia may have been an issue, I'm still super sad I didn't get waitlisted. Where else did you apply/waiting to hear from?

@ LovelyLici-

I am in the same boat as you. Applied to the Psych NP track and did not get in. I have a solid GPA, experience in Inpatient psych at Children's Hospital in Boston, global experience in Costa Rica and Nicaragua, great recommendations (or so I thought...) however, I also scored a 970 on the GRE. I took it twice and my scores barely budged....I am convinced my brain just does not work that "black and white" way that the GRE requires. Hell, I memorized 500 words and saw 4 of them on the test. Not fun.

Regardless, I know how you feel right now, but keep your head high and I'll try to do the same. You certainly sound qualified to be a nurse and someday you will be, and until then all you can do is keep working towards that. If I do not get into my other programs this year I am considering paying that ungodly price for a GRE prep course (just a thought?)

Hope this made you feel a bit better!

APU is Azusa Pacific University. I don't really remember why I didn't apply to USD but I think it was because I didn't like their program. Did you apply to WesternU too? I'm leaning towards Columbia though more than anything, NY will be a big change for us!

Congrats to all who got their acceptance letters today! I'm in for peds, and I'm so excited!!!

Since I'm from California, I'm trying to weigh my options, and I have a quick question. I know that ETP allows a 1 year leave for clinical experience, but if you couldn't complete the master's program due to extenuating circumstances, would you still be able to receive the BSN?

If you want to commute from the suburbs another option is to live along the Hudson Line of the Metro North. From there you can transfer at Marble Hill to the 1 train. The 1 train stops directly at 168th St.

Thanks for this. I've only been considering New Have Line thus far.

Hmmmm....just got this email this morning:

Dear Prospective Student,

We encountered some technical difficulties, but the issues have been resolved and you may submit your application. If you have any questions about the program or application process, please let us know.

They must have changed their mind.

Hi everyone!

I just checked my email this morning and I got in for the Peds specialty! I'm still waiting to here back from yale, boston college, northeastern and usf...good luck to everyone else still waiting to hear back!

I know for sure that I want to try living over on the east coast, now that I know one school has accepted me over there, I'm really nervous thinking about the move! I'm most concerned about the cost of living and everything though -- although I'm from the Bay Area, would you say that rent is comparatively similar?

And probably odd question - how often do students in the same class room together? I really don't think I'd want to pay so much to live on my own and I never mind having roommates! =]
