About Nursing Programs

Undergraduate

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

The Traditional BSN program is based on a cohort model. Therefore, all coursework will be assigned to a specific semester and is a prerequisite for progression to the next semester.

Students may be admitted from high school. If starting in the fall, the program will be a 4½-year program. If the student starts in the Spring, it will be a 4-year program.

Available option for those who completed a bachelor's program in another major, but want to pursue a career in nursing. Consider applying for the Entry-Level Master's in Nursing program (ELM) .

Licensed Vocational Nurse to BSN (LVN to BSN) and Licensed Vocational Nurse to RN (LVN to RN)

Potential Applicants (not all inclusive)

  • 48 units or more of transferable credit with a C- or better from an accredited university, per official transcripts (maximum of 70 Units can be transferred from a community college)
  • Some work experience as an LPN may be required
  • Current LVN/LPN license
  • Basic academic and collegiate-level English skills

RN-BSN

APU's RN to BSN degree program is designed for the working registered nurse to advance to the baccalaureate level.

Applicants (not all inclusive)

  • Have 60 units or more of transferable credit, up to 70 can be transferred with a minimum of C- or greater, from a community college
  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale
  • Have RN licensure and graduated from an accredited associate degree or diploma nursing program
  • Recent work experience - refresher course may be recommended for those who have not practiced in more than 5 years.

Bridge to BSN - Transition to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing

Azusa Pacific's Bridge to Bachelor of Science in Nursing is a program designed for students entering their final year in the Associate's Degree in Nursing (ADN) program at a community college and would like an early start on coursework for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.

Graduate

Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)

Nationally accredited, the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) prepares students for an advanced level degree. Graduate students can have a degree and be prepared for roles as clinical nurse specialists, family nurse practitioners, adult-gerontology nurse practitioners, pediatric nurse practitioners, or school nurses, and may elect a secondary specialty in administration or education.

After completion of the program, graduates are eligible to apply for state advanced practice certification or credential in their specialties.

Those who have earned a bachelor's degree in another discipline are eligible to enroll in the entry-level master's program. Nurses who already have an MSN from another institution are also eligible to enroll in a post-master's certificate program.

Clinical Nurse Specialist

The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) specialties offers two specialist programs:  the Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist and the Pediatric Clinical Nurse Specialist.

School Nurse Services Credential (SNSC) and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP)

The combined Master of Science in Nursing with School Nurse Services Credential (SNSC) and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) is designed to prepare the bachelor's degree-prepared registered nurses to become effective practitioners in the areas of school health and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. The Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Certificate is designed for those who want to focus on primary care for children in a variety of other settings.

Post-Master's Certificates

Nurses who have already received an MSN at APU or another institution are eligible for the post-master's nursing certificate programs, which prepare nurses who obtain an advanced practice specialty.

Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (PhD)

The PhD in Nursing prepares nurses who hold master's degrees to contribute to the improvement of health care and to the next generation of nurses by serving as academicians.

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)

Residency Practice Hours

At APU, 1,100 clinical hours are required as part of the program. Students may transfer up to five hundred (500) qualified clinical hours toward the DNP from their master's program and six hundred (600) clinical hours - three hundred (300) in each of the SON DNP residency courses, which totals 1,100 hours.

Translational Research Project

The DNP, a practice-focused doctorate, includes an integrative practice experience enacted in the residency courses over the time frame of six semesters. Every student enrolled in the practice-focused DNP program will create an evidence-based translational research project (TRP) as part of their experience. With the multiple number of practice doctorates at the university the DNP students are able to have opportunities for interdisciplinary coursework and collaborative projects.

Graduate Applicants (not all inclusive)

  1. A Graduate application for admission
  2. Official transcripts of completion of BSN and MSN
  3. Copies of any professional certifications/registrations used by nurses with advanced practice -state or national. Transcripts may be used as evidence if needed.
  4. Letter from your advanced practice program stating the number of clinical hours completed as part of that program. Up to 500 hours may be transferable toward the DNP program's required total of 1100 hours, per departmental approval.
