Columbia University ETP 2011

Published

Thought it'd be a good idea to start a thread for prospective applicants to Columbia's ETP program starting Summer 2011. I was going to apply last year but passed on it in favor of working for another year.

Applications are due November 15, 2010! Right around the corner ...

Anyone else preparing for this also? :clown:

@Nikkii164: I am very sorry to hear you did not get in. In my opinion you seem extremely qualified. I think that admissions decisions do not always make sense. I was wondering if you are planing on attending Emory or are you waiting to hear from other schools? I was also accepted into the Emory ABSN/MSN program for acute care pediatrics. I really like there program. My decision has come down to deciding between Emory and Columbia. Do you have any insights into Emory's program or what are your opinions of it? Any information or insight you have would be very helpful.

Hi everyone, I was reading past boards from ETP 2008, 2009, 2010. Have you gone through them? Towards the end of them, there were several current ETP students really making disparaging comments about Columbia School of Nursing.

I was wondering how many of you know students that have gone through ETP and the masters program? I know one and her experience seemed pretty positive.

Reading those past posts has made me nervous to get more information.

Question: For those who were accepted into the Psych NP program, what were your GRE scores? What are your goals for entering the program. Anyone care to share?

Hi Lici -- I'm so sorry to hear that! You and a number of other people on here, like others have pointed out, sound extremely qualified. Here are my stats - I got accepted into psych - FYI:

Undergrad GPA from top liberal arts school: overall GPA 3.45, psych (BA) GPA 3.6 -- no master's degrees

GRE score: 640 math, 590 verbal; writing 5.5

I have a lot of background working with children and adolescents in therapeutic work, also have done a fair amount of psych research, and taught as a classroom teacher for a year. I also know that I had really strong recs and a strong essay.

I have heard mixed things about Columbia -- both positive and disparaging. Not sure what to make of it, but I'm also waiting to hear on Yale and BC (but know that I'd prefer Yale and Columbia over BC). Not sure where I'll go if I get into both. Anybody else considering those two programs as top two?

Congratulations to all who got in! I'm a current ETP/Masters student and I've been on here before as well as a few of my counterparts. Feel free to ask questions about the program I'm sure we'll answer as best as we can. Classes are light for us right now. Also, the accepted students day is a great way to get a feel for the program so I'd say come if you can.

I know sgmay brought up some questions about past classes and dissatisfaction with the program. If you go through this thread a few of us addressed it. Long story short, no program is perfect but with our class this year it seems like things are going pretty well. The faculty and administration have taken steps to make the program better and I'd say the majority of students are satisfied. Again, no program is perfect and at this point most of this accelerated programs are very similar and are what you make of them. Hope that helps.

Also, Boto and those curious about admissions, I spoke with someone in the office and they quoted me this: "~800 complete applications, accepted around 300 (~40% acceptance rate) and expect a class of 150-160. Biggest reason for not accepting the offer is financial (as boto mentioned it's pretty expensive to live in NYC and the program isn't cheap)

Finally, those who are looking to commute to the program... it's doable but definitely painful at times. We have student that come in from really far out on long island, Stamford CT, NJ suburbs, West Chester, Hoboken, Brooklyn etc. Most use public transport and make it work, some drive.

Again, congrats to everyone who got in. Those on the wait list don't despair, things open up (sometimes a week before classes start -yikes) and those who did not make it in this time don't worry...wherever you end up will be great and we'll all be future nurse & NP colleges at some point :)

Here are some questions for current ETPers:

- Do you feel that ETPers are well-respected amongst the nursing community in NYC?

- How easy is it to find an RN position after ETP, and during the masters portion?

Also, I'd love to hear from any Psych/Mental Health NP students at Columbia. Anyone out there? : )

Hi Sgmay -

Congrats on your acceptance! I was also accepted to the Psych NP track at Columbia...seems there are not too many of us psych folks out there. Are you set on Columbia or waiting for other schools? What populations do you want to work with? I have been working with patients diagnosed with schizophrenia for many years now and love it, so I hope to continue working primarily with this population.

Are you going to admit day on 3/04? If so, maybe I will see you there. I'm trying to decide between a few schools and think this will be an invaluable experience in making this life-changing decision easier!

Tanya

Hi Tanya,

Yes, I'm planning to come out on 3/4. I really hope that we get to meet a lot of current students and the specialty faculty and director. Reading those old threads from years past made me nervous!

I'm still waiting to hear back from a couple of schools also. Columbia would be very convenient for me (for other reasons), so I'm hoping that visiting will calm my reservations and help make any potential decisions easier.

Yay Psych! If there are any current psych ETPers out there it'd be awesome to hear about the faculty and clinicals.

Hi guys, I'm not in psych but I'll see if I can ask someone to jump on and answer your psych questions.

At accepted students day you'll get to eat lunch with a student in your specialty and then you will go to a meeting with your program director and at that meeting there will be 1 or 2 other current students who will answer questions. It was at accepted students day that I decided on Columbia over Yale. Both programs are great and you can't go wrong with whichever you chose. I know a lot of my cohort chose between the two and I know a few folks up at Yale and they are very happy too!

cu1234-

Thanks, you are so awesome! That's funny that you mention Yale and people choosing between the 2, because I have a funny feeling that I will be stuck deciding between Columbia, Yale, and possibly UCSF. I thought it odd that Columbia didn't interview, but it sounds like admit day will be much like interview days at other universities, which will be a great resource in helping folks choose between programs and deciding what is the best fit for them. Just out of curiosity - how did you know Columbia was the right program for you? Did you get a gut feeling while you were visiting that you didn't get anywhere else, or was it a more practical decision?

It is surreal to think that after all of this preparation our dreams are finally at our fingertips. I wish everyone the best of luck in pursuing them :D

Hi all,

Does anyone know the odds of being accepted once on the waitlist, particularly for midwifery??? Thanks for any help:)

Hey everyone,

I am interested in knowing the same thing. Do a lot of people get accepted off the waitlist? Congrats again to all the people who were accepted!!!!
