Columbia University ETP Program 2013

Published

The thread here for the Columbia University ETP program for entry in 2012 is pretty long (45 pages right now!), so I was hoping to elicit some of the same responses for those who are applying in 2013. Let's get to know each other!

Why are you applying to Columbia? What have you heard about the program- good, bad or ugly? Are you nervous, excited, ambivalent?

Looking forward to getting to know some of you!

Specializes in ER, IICU, PCU, PACU, EMS.

Moved to NY nursing programs for more of a response.

I'm planning to apply for the 2013 class. I'm nervous and am taking a leap of faith. My undergraduate gpa is laughable. I wasn't a dedicated student when I graduated 16 years ago. I am doing very well in my prereqs. I am missing two more prereqs and taking micro now and will take orgo in the fall. I'm going to try to get into the anesthesia program. My goal is to take the GRE in August.

I attended the information session in 2011. This is definitely what I want to do. If I don't get into Columbia, my backup is Lehman College. I'm not going to a worse school that costs about about as much. I'd rather get a CUNY (affordable/no loans) BSN, work a year, and apply to the MSN for anesthesia.

Good luck everyone!

Yeah! I'm excited to see that this thread has already been started. I just finished reading through every single page and post on the 2012 thread. I'm applying to the Nurse-Midwifery track. I'm pretty nervous because I know it's one of the more competitive specialties. I have heard really mixed reviews about Columbia, but location is one of the most important components in the allure it has for me. I am partially interested in working and studying in an urban environment.

Particularly* whoops.

hollysf, I did the same thing! It was interesting seeing everyone else's experiences and trying to glean information that would be beneficial when it was time for me to apply as well.

To introduce myself to this board, I am a native New Yorker who is making a career change from human resources to nursing. At this time, I am in micro and biochem, and only need to take a nutrition course and the GRE.

I'm applying to the Adult Nurse Practitioner track, with the hope of specializing in Oncology. You are correct, the Nurse-Midwifery specialty is highly competitive! When I attended the Open House earlier this year, we were told that out of about 150 accepted students, approximately 10 are accepted into that part of the program. For me, Columbia is my #1 choice, but I am applying to 7 other schools this Fall. As a fallback, I will be applying to 4 other schools next Spring.

Hi Guys!

I am new here too. I have been lurking for a few months but just started my account today...

I am also going to Apply to Columbia for 2013. I am hoping to get into the CRNA program which I hear is also INCREDIBLY competitive. I still have to take Nutrition and Dev Psych over the summer and Micro & Organic in the fall.

I am so excited to be applying finally. I have been tossing the idea around for the last two years. With such a huge commitment involved, I wanted to be sure that this was the right decision. Previously a financial analyst, I have spent the last ten years at home as a stay at home mom. Man that makes me sound old!! I am 36 :) I have been very active in the volunteer community but I feel like it is time to jump start a new career.

Like ARickli I am also a native NYer. I live about an hour outside of NYC though, so I am not thrilled about the commute. I am worried about the clinicals being scattered throughout the city. Columbia is my #1 choice but I also intend to apply to PACE, NYU and College of New Rochelle just in case.

Good-luck everybody. I can't wait to share the process with you!!

GM

Hi Ginamarie and ARickli! Welcome :specs:

I'm considering applying to NYU as well. Do you happen to know how easy it is to transfer from the accelerated BSN program to the MSN program at NYU? Based on what I have been reading online, it doesn't seem like it is too difficult? I have heard such mixed reviews about NYU. I know that the lectures are 150+ students and the students are a mix of traditional BSN and ABSN students. Do either of you have any insight as native New Yorkers? The whole process of picking programs and applying to schools is so stressful--and we've still got months to go!

I am currently living in San Francisco, and I am pretty committed to the idea of moving to NYC. Columbia is definitely my first choice as well. i am excited that this thread is getting more responses! I am sure I will have questions/need to vent in a few months!

I'll be in Developmental Psych and Nutrition this summer too! Good luck to everyone!

GM, where are you located? I live in Rockland County, NY with my DH, 4 kids and 2 dogs. :)

When I spoke with the admissions advisors, they seemed to indicate that most of the clinicals would be in the Fort Washington area but that when you are paired up with your one-on-one in your specialty at the end of the program, it could be at any of the Columbia hospitals. One of the great things about being in Rockland is that our local hospital, Nyack, is a part of the Columbia group. :)

Hey 2013 applicants! I am applying to Columbia 2013 too! I will finish up my BS in bio in December. So far I have a list of 8 schools I am applying to (ones with combined RN or BSN and MSN). I'm going the acute care NP route. Does anyone know how competitive that specialty is at Columbia?

ZhaZha, which schools are you applying to? Are they all in the NYC metro area as well?

Haha noo. I am literally applying to 8 schools in 8 different states which means I have no idea where I'll end up. But hopefully this will increase my chances of getting in somewhere. And it will help me weigh financial aid packages if I get in multiple places, which I doubt will happen, but a girl can dream...
