Columbia MDE 2022

Published

I know the application hasn't opened yet, but wondering if there was anyone else thinking of applying to Columbia MDE/DNP programs for June 2022 entry?

What program did everyone on here apply for? Also where do you all see yourself in 5 years? Any interested in a specialty? I’m also asking the people only reading this thread too (I know there’s more than 5 of us!) so please respond if you are comfortable ?
Me:2022 MDE/DNP (FNP) - dermatology and aesthetic medicine… there should really be an DNP dermatology program at this point. IMO.  My end Goal is to team/partner with a plastic surgeon or derm and co-own into a practice or open my own and maybe own into a Med spa possibly as well.

I applied for PMHNP. I do have a pretty specific intended specialty and want to work with underserved populations, but in case someone from admissions is lurking I don’t want to dox myself (yet). End goal is to basically revolutionize healthcare? Nbd, LOL

Not trying to fuel anyones anxiety here… but reading over last years thread… it’s kind of frustrating to see how many people were on second acceptance rounds and also denied admissions… a lot of their credentials all seemed stellar… I know there’s a lot that goes into acceptance and who knows what the “real stories are” but it’s just like damn… I have no idea what to expect LOL  I’m left feeling confused and like “crap”. Anyone else feel similar?

From what I have seen and learned throughout this process is that decisions are really unknown. It is hard to truly know what a program is looking for specifically and they also probably try to build a cohort that is diverse and  will work well together to represent their school the best. A prestigious school, such as Columbia, receives thousands of applications each year for only a select number of spots. Majority of the students applying to Columbia are extremely intelligent, well-rounded, and have passions and interests that could potentially transform healthcare as we know it. It is just unfortunate that the spots are limited because a rejection definitely does not mean you were not capable of doing well or completing the program with flying colors.

I also read in last year's thread that decisions went out in waves, with the first wave being the first week of January where some students expressed receiving an acceptance. Then, the second wave took place closer to February where it seems the rest of their decisions went out (acceptances/waitlists/rejections). This entire process is SO stressful and my blood pressure will definitely be through the roof starting January 1st as most schools release their decisions between January-March. ?

Yes it’s VERY frustrating to see that decisions went out for first round Jan 6th… that seems to have never happened before... And their deadline was Oct 15th!  Ours was Oct 4th. So we technically should receive the first round by Dec 27th  haha. (Being sarcastic). Your response is totally what I had in my head just voicing my genuine frustrations.  ?

I’m trying to remind myself that if I don’t get accepted, it’s not because I’m not “good” enough. It’s because as an institution they might not be aligned with my goals or values, and therefore wouldn’t be a supportive environment anyway. Still a hard pill to swallow though.

Egh I just think it comes down to getting the application in early and luck and who you “know” … everyone that applies for the most part has what it takes to get in… they tell you the minimum requirements to apply…  there’s just a limited amount of spots.

I submitted my application mid August And received the follow up Oct 1st. So I’m assuming I’ll be in the first round of acceptance/rejection(s)  but Who knows.  I’m hoping it’s early again like last year!  One more week (ish).

How do you guys know roughly when admission status is known?

One week from now is so close. I’m getting nervous!

Haha if it's about knowing people and getting your application in early then I'm pretty much screwed!! Reading through the thread from last year I didn't get the impression that when people submitted the application had a huge bearing on when they received decisions, but I obviously could be wrong - especially since it's a minority of applicants who are posting on here. Likewise yearning for decisions to be released ASAP

The one week from now estimation is based on last year's dates. There was an initial round of decisions that went out in early January, and then several other subsequent rounds that extended through the end of February I believe. We have no way of knowing if that will happen again this year! Admissions told me that we would likely get decisions in February but maybe earlier, so I'm not going to hold my breath.

OK. Woah. That’s a big range. thanks for all the info.

Does anyone know why some decisions were known early?

I think the early decisions were for people they were the most confident about regarding both acceptance and rejection
