Has anyone started a thread yet? The application is due in 174 days and as you can see I'm already obsessing.
Anyone else?!
I just submitted my deposit! I am going to Columbia for sure for FNP!
My Stats:
-Undergrad GPABiomedical Science: 3.4
-Graduate coursework as non degree seeking student in medical science GPA: 3.5
-prerequisite GPA: 4.0
-GRE 156/160(verbal/quantitative) essay 5/6
-emergency department scribe
-worked at homeless shelter with public defender in providing mental health support to homeless population
-stem cell research experience in ALS and microbiology researcher in water contamination and infectious disease
Undergrad GPA 3.4 biochemistry (had some difficulties completing my degree, took terms off, was candid about the reasons)
GRE 165/163 (95%/86%) in verbal/math, essay 4.5/80%
Prereq GPA: 4.0
LoR: one from undergrad professor, one from prereq instructor, one from former supervisor
Work experience: college admissions counseling for high school students for about 4 years.
I really thought I wasn't going to get in because it was very obvious that my undergrad GPA took a nosedive in my junior year. In my personal statement I was very honest about my personal problems and I did show efforts in improvements considering my GRE score and prereq GPA (two years after undergrad).
Might as well post my stats. I got in for Pediatrics
Undergrad GPA: 3.6
Pre-req: 3.8
GRE: Verbal 155, Quant 164, Writing 5.0
LoR: Physiology lab TA with the professor co-signing it, Professor from a pharm sci course, and my supervisor from my volunteering experiences in Taiwan (who also speaks English)
Experiences: Joined a club on campus where we went on clinic trips to Mexico every month, volunteered with special needs children at a occupational therapy-based karate dojo, went to Taiwan to volunteer at a hospital and did a bunch of stuff, mostly with nurses and going into the countryside. Those experiences didn't actually last for more than a year so I'm surprised I got accepted xD So happy though

I had the opposite feeling lol. Upenn was my first choice but I got wait listed but now that I think about it, columbia will be faster!
Tuition is about 1300 per credit hour; first 60 credits will be same for all and the varies for MSN specialities. So looking at around $80k to $90k per year... They don't offer merit based scholarships (Columbia) just need based so hopefully that helps me out a bit otherwise it will be penny counting !!

Wowwwwwwwwwwwwww
That debt later on...
Penn seems like a solid program, but I honestly don't like Philly. Also, I spoke to a few people who are current Penn students and some of them had not so good things to say about the program (I won't go into details, but a lot of the professors at Penn want to produce nurses that engage in power struggles with doctors). On the other hand, all the people I spoke to at Columbia seemed to love the program, plus it's in NYC - so much more interesting than run down Philly. Anyway, I shouldn't bash Penn. I'll probably end up going there, but I am very disappointed I didn't get into Columbia.

No problem, at all!
GPA: 3.65
GRE - this was the low point of my application, but still surprisingly have been admitted to Columbia and UT so far. Math and verbal were both around%and writing was around 90%.
Experience: ~2 years working as a counselor in a residential eating disorder treatment center, ~1 year working in a Title I high school as a behavior coach in a mental health classroom, summer work experience working in community mental health in a program that specialized working with inner-city youth of SF just released from 5150 hold.
Letters of Rec: Strong. All three were from my work experience in mental health facilities.
Goal Statement: I think it's really important to express your interest in the program, future goals, and go into detail about your work experience and how it effected your decision to choose this career. I think it's important to convey how these experiences shaped you as a person, rather than just stating what you did at each clinic/hospital. I think my experience/goal statement really boosted my application, more than anything else.
PM me if you have any other questions! Best of luck!!
