Columbia ETP 2015

Published

Has anyone started a thread yet? The application is due in 174 days and as you can see I'm already obsessing.

Anyone else?!

Just got back a grade from biostats fall and it's not what I expected =(... I highly doubt they'll accept anything less than a C which means I doubt i'll get in unless i retake it during Spring... which seems almost impossible with my current classes i'm already registered for.

Oh no! There's no way you can fit it into your schedule? :/ I'm so sorry. Stats was my worst class - C+. Good luck! I hope you can figure it out.

Just emailed the professor teaching it.. I'll just have to get permission from the school to take extra credits and find a way to fit that into 6 other classes, home and a child. I'm sure I'll find a way. Thanks again =).

I hear all the struggles! I had to juggle 19 units and working in the ER 4 times a week, so i'm finally glad to have a few weeks off to relax and complete my spring semester. The only prereq I have remaining is Microbiology (my most dreaded one), and as for not doing too well in Biostats, I agree. It was my most difficult class from my upper division classes. My weakness is my GRE score, so I hope they really look at everything each of us contribute and not just one factor, which from what I've heard, they do

Dang, good luck everyone on your classes!!! I'm getting some interviews from other schools and I have an on-call job so that's keeping me occupied! :D

MY GRE scores sucked to be quite honest! All I need is A&P 1 and 2 (both accelerated) and now Biostats, AGAIN. I'm hoping they can look past the numbers (although my other pre req grades were good) and just focus on my personal statement, my experience and recommendations. I tried not to work myself up about any of this but as February gets closer I can't help but want it even more. I'm sure you'll be fine and they will look past your GREs.

If you have a good professor, microbio is really fun! Mine was good enough I'm dreading taking a class with a different prof for my last pre req. As for GRE fears - everyone seems to say they're "just a formality" that shouldn't be a bad thing so long as the rest of your application is strong.

I'm a current Columbia ETP student. We are now halfway through the program. I tried to go through and read many of the posts on this thread, but there are 21 pages. VERY active group! I remember the application process well, very nerve racking. I had 1 pre-req outstanding (stats) when I applied. I also applied to UCSF, Yale, MGH, and a few other places. I forgot the whole list... it seems like SO long ago now. I was rejected from UCSF. I interviewed at Yale, I was not wow'ed. I chose Columbia over MGH.

To the person who took Stats and got a low grade, so sorry to hear that :( If you can fit it in your schedule to take it again, I would try to do that. I don't mean to sound pessimistic but I would be shocked if they accepted a grade lower than a C. Most people have 4.0 for their pre-req's.

Here to help if I can answer any questions. Also open to PM's if anyone has any very specific questions. Good luck guys!

Great info! When you went to yale do you remember if they were on the new west campus. I have an interview there in a few weeks. I'm still hopeful for colombia. What do you think of the program so far? The good? The bad? What's your specialization?

They were on the new West Campus in Orange when I interviewed. It was very separate from EVERYTHING. The only things nearby were hotels and an outback steak house. After living in NYC for 7 months (I moved from California), I can't imagine living in CT. I feel like I made the best life decision ever. NY is amazing. Columbia is awesome. I love the program. I am currently in the Acute concentration, but might switch to Adult-Gero concentration. Another plus of Columbia is they allow you to freely switch tracks (except midwifery and Anes, those two are kinda on their own separate from everyone else after the first year).

I applied for acute, but am becoming more interested in the FNP tract. Why the switch of you don't mind me asking?

The scope of practice for ACNP is deeper but narrower. I am not certain that is what I want anymore. You learn more about yourself and your interests as you go through the classes and various clinical rotations. FNP is definitely the largest cohort in ETP, so you would be in good company :)

Here is the Columbia Nursing student blog. Hope you find it slightly funny and/or helpful: Student Blog | School of Nursing The one called switching specialties is humorous because now I've seen how much this happens.

Thank you! I am definitely going to retake that stats class.

So most if not all of the accepted students had a 4.0 GPA of their pre reqs? Makes me feel like I don't really have a shot then but I guess we'll see. Only a month away
