Columbia ETP 2010

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hey Y'all!

I'm getting ready to apply to the Columbia's ETP for 2010. I was just wondering who else was applying and what you were doing to make your application stronger! Also where else are you applying and what do your stats look like (GPA, GRE, experience, etc) ? I'm getting nervous as I start the whole application process and just thought I'd turn to the forums for some support and guidance!

I'm looking forward to sharing the journey with y'all! Hope to hear from you soon! :)

Ah! I'm on tenterhooks! I just want to know, so I can figure out my next steps. I haven't applied anywhere else, since the other programs I'm considering have more requirements than Columbia, and I'll need another year to complete them.

Good luck everyone! I'm sure we're all very nervous and excited!

Hi KDROSEO!

I understand exactly how you feel. I made a choice not to apply any schools other than Columbia. I have my BS in Dental Hygiene from Columbia and my MA in Health from Columbia. Frankly if I do not get in this I am not going to become a nurse. I am used to the IVY League system. My cousin is number one in the medical school and really a young genius.

If you want to go to a school that is not too expensive you may want to try Jersey School of Medicine and Dentistry. They have 14 month program and they are one of the few nursing schools that has an anesthesia program run by Claire Golden and very nice person. Their programs start every semester.

I live in Manhattan on the river in an apartment in the sky. I am not interested in traveling to another state although I will probably have a long commute to CU if I am accepted. I do not take the subway so I will probably take a taxi just to save time and energy. I have made up my mind that if I do not get into Columbia ETP I will get my PhD.

You are young and have time to get your prerequisites. Most of the courses can be taken online and you can finish them in less than a year. I did all the sciences over to prove to Columbia that I am really serious about becoming an NP and I finished anatomy, chemistry, microbiology, physics and calculus by July. I was really exhausted when I finished and then went to Italy on vacation for two months. If you are organized you can take everything online. I decided to repeat all the sciences over because my courses are more than five years old since most of the schools require you do that. I graduated Columbia Medical & Dental a long time ago. My MA from CU was completed in 2004. Right now I am taking a freelance course in advanced physiology with Dr. Cizaldo. He is pretty good and makes the course seem simple compared to most instructors. It is free just Google his website if you are interested.

I wish everyone good luck. Columbia is truly the best school in NYC and I can tell you that from my experience of graduating from it twice.

Thanks for the suggestion on the Jersey school, Dingras, but I refuse to stay any longer in NJ - I despise it here! I work in Manhattan and spend my free time there and sleep in NJ. It's just much cheaper to live here.

I've done everything online so far, since I work long hours and can't commit to attending a school in person. It's really much more convenient online.

You wouldn't consider NYU's nursing program? That's actually my first choice, but they don't offer the same generous scholarships that Columbia offers.

Good luck to you! We should find out shortly!!!

Hi KDROSE 01

You will probably get into CU. What about Stoneybrook. They also have a short term program to becom RN and then you can go and get the NP in NY.

Hi:

I live across the street from NYU Hospital and know nurses at NYU. They do not give you one cent . It is a money school but if you do not mind not getting any gifts from the school NYU could work. THere is also Pace which has a short program also. I love Rhona the chairman of the NP program . I would have to tell you my thoughts on the RN Chairman at Pace in person.

THey too do not offer any money and only have NP in FNP.

I did not realize you came from NJ. I come from NY and I lived here my entire life Born raised and educated in NYC. I LOVE NY.

Do you do well on the GRE's ?

Sigrid:

Iam sure that I am older than you and this is for sure. THey have students of all ages.

I've considered Stony Brook and Downstate, but they have very few spots and many, many applicants. They also give preference to New Yorkers, minorities, and those with actual clinical experience, so I'm already at a disadvantage with them.

As for NYU, well, I'm not interested in handing over all my hard-earned to cash to them only to have them hand it over to my friends in their various PhD programs. My friends, many of whom are not even American, are receiving free educations at NYU, along with a stipend. I'd prefer to keep my money in my pocket, not theirs, especially considering they're going to out-earn me eventually! Besides, I can think of some other schools that have better nursing programs and cost less or give generous scholarships. So, no NYU. :-(

I hope I get into CU, but I have no idea. I didn't do well on my GREs, but scored just above CU's required score. If I'd had more time to prepare for them, I'm sure I would've done better, but I had no intentions of applying to CU until a month before the application was due; before that I wasn't aware of the substantial scholarship they offer, which is why I wasn't going to apply.

I have excellent recommendations, a strong essay, have done well in school and have also shadowed a pediatric nurse practitioner, so that's working in my favor. Only time will tell! I hope we know tomorrow morning!!!

That's exciting that you could be the oldest student ever in the program. We had a woman graduate with my undergrad class who was in her 70s or 80s. Pretty amazing!

Hi Everyone,

I'm new here. Just wanted to express and share my anticipation with all of you. I'm sure you're all just as antsy as I am. I've been checking my email every hour or so for any news at all. I also hope we'll wake up and see our decisions early next morning!!!! If the trend follows from the past 2 years, we'll get them either tomorrow or the day after. Though, I've gone through the forums from the past years and there seemed to be issues with sending out the decisions via online. I hope we all get our decisions in a timely manner and together at the same time, or else I'll be pulling my hair out soon. Please update us if you got accepted!! Good luck everyone!!!!!!!!!

Hey hilife808 -

I'm so nervous! I just want to know either way...yes or no whatever I just want a decision. I have applied to SLU, Georgetown, Columbia and am in the process of applying to NYU, Loyola Chicago and Xavier. I am all over the place and have no idea where I want to end up or really what program is best for me. The whole process is confusing and more than overwhelming. University of Hawaii would be awesome! I'm sure we will find out the news soon. Do you think they will send us an email when the decision is available online? I have been checking regularly but haven't gotten anything yet. Good luck!

Hiii everyone!

I'm super anxious too! This whole week my stomach's been doing flips every time i think about it! I even dream about it! And since I'm on the west coast, I wake up super early just to check my email, and then go right back to sleep! haha i know i sound crazy! at least we can all vent to each other! :)

Good luck everyone! Hopefully we'll hear good news soon!

Hello Everyone,

Just wanted to join in on the thread. Glad to know that I'm not the only one going crazy! LOL I also keep checking my e-mail every few mins, I can't concentrate and my stomach is in knots.

I really expected an answer yesterday. I also followed last year's thread and noticed that decisions were mailed out on Feb 3rd but that was on a Tuesday last year! Anyways, lets keep our fingers crossed for today. I just wanted to know the answer, whatever it is. I need to plan accordingly for the next couple of months.

Lets go crazy together! :uhoh3:

Hi :

I was wondering if anyone ha called the office of Judy WOlfe the Director of admissions to ask when they expect the acceptance letters to go out.

I believe Judy Wolfe sends you an email to go to the application web site. When you login you get a letter from Judy Wolfe with the results of your application. Last year when I was not accepted I sent a letter to President Bollinger because I felt it was a little cruel the way they send those rejection letters. Since I have already graduated from Columbia Medical and Dental School as a Hygieinist I am familar with the system and I felt it was not right what they did. If I get accepted I will be very happy . If I do not it will not be the end of the world. I will find another way to accomplish my goals. It is a very good school but but very politiical like all large Universities.
