Columbia BSN/MSN ETP 2014

Published

I was surprised that there didn't seem to be a thread for this year's applicants to Columbia's ETP program. So I thought I would start one. The information session was today, but I wasn't able to go. :( I was hoping someone else went and would be able to post any admission statistics or tips for the personal statement they gave.

I really hope tomorrow is the *day*.

Just an FYI, Columbia does not allow students to defer unless circumstances are military related. Columbia accepts a massive number of students and many choose to go elsewhere because of cost/location/etc. I was accepted last year and I remember being really surprised at how many students were at accepted students day. Unfortunately, due to mostly financial reasons, I couldn't attend and had to reapply for the 2014 cohort. Last year I had applied for deferment, but it was denied.

Anyways, I have great friends in the program and have heard only positive things from Columbia's students. Good luck everyone!

I think every school is different. I was accepted to 2 others and had 3 weeks for one and 10 days for another.

WOW that is such a short period of time! :/

I know! I ended up placing a deposit for one of them so that I wouldn't lose the spot and am using it as my backup.

good choice . . . same here! i had to accept my offer and put down my deposit for the other school i got into . . . just in case! :/

maybe this was mentioned earlier and I missed it, but does anyone know the admission/acceptance rate for this BSN/MSN ETP Program at Columbia? i don't know how many people applied, but the university website said that they accept between 160 - 180 students each year. anyone know?

hollysf, what is the estimated cost to attend Columbia? including living expenses? Did they offer you financial aid? I'm getting really worried that I may not be able to afford Columbia. :nailbiting:

The number of applicants varies - depending on the source. I read that the 180-160 is a roughly 80% acceptance.(out of 2xx apps) this number makes sense. I do, however, feel like this year will include an a larger pool of applicants. They say that the class is eclectic - including artists/musicians, and an American Idol finalist.

Really? I thought it was more like several hundred, like at least 600. I applied to some smaller schools, like Marquette in WI which gets up to 200 applicants some years. Granted, it is MUCH cheaper, but still. I hope you're right!

At the two information sessions that I attended, I was told that CUSON received approximately 800 applications last year. If they accept 200 of those applicants, that boils down to a 25% acceptance rate. The numbers are probably similar this year.

@divobari idk about those numbers, I think there are usually two times as many applicants than you stated (I remember talking to someone in admissions over the phone way before I decided to apply to nursing school). I know Yale (my first choice!) & Columbia have a lot of overlap in terms of applicants, which was verified on my interview day, they received 480 applicants, interviewed 201 of them and will accept ~80. So Columbia's acceptance rate is still relatively high but not as high as 80% for sure.

Yes, I seem to remember hearing the same number at the Columbia Open House I attended. Approximately 800 applicants last year. The 2013 cohort ended up being 170 students. I would imagine they actually accept somewhere in the neighborhood of 225 to allow for deferrals and those who decide to go with different programs. Although they did indicate that they would make room for everyone should every accepted student decide to accept a spot in the program!

I am happy to be wrong about my numbers. I attended two info sessions and they didn't make it seem like they had such an abundance of applications.(cost?) In fact, they blatantly said that it is hard to recruit MSN(I know most of us are ETPer's) students. Maybe I was stuck on the total tuition numbers and missed the applicant numbers portion of both sessions. I do, however, remember Jose saying that they didn't have the time to interview all of the applicants, so it must be quite a bit.(more than 2XX?) Further, we don't know what they consider an "applicant". So, while they may get 800 people, only 300 may be considered complete applications. For example, they talked about how many incomplete pre-reqs would mean an automatic denial, because it is hard to imagine that one would complete the remaining pre-reqs within the remaining time. Starting next year, applicants will need to have 3 science pre-reqs, i think, completed by the deadline.

So, I should have put all of this in my previous post and I am not married to anything that I post.
