Colorado New Grads- Do you have jobs?

U.S.A. Colorado

Published

I am graduating in May from UCD and I am curious how recent new grads are fairing in our great state. I am hearing horror stories of people not being able to get jobs and working in waitressing, grocery stores, etc. Who has found a job? Who hasn't? What has worked for you and what hasn't? I am not attached to any one hospital, but would like to stay in the Denver Metro area.

It's very difficult to get a job outside of nursing when they see on your application (or ask what you have been doing for the past few years) that you are a new nurse grad. They have plenty of outher people to pick from, and they know the nurse grad will be looking for nurse jobs and won't be sticking around long.

Hey all,

I wanted to know if anyone had directly spoken with a nurse recruiter about how many new grad positions are avaliable for the 2010 residency program at University of Colorado. I have an interview scheduled, but I am from out of state. So, if they are interviewing like 1000 people for 10 spots or something ridiculous, then to be honest I don't know if it's worth the flight cost. Should call the recruiter directly, but they never seem to pick up the phone. Leaving a message or sending an email with that question just seems a little off-putting. :)

Anyone have a direct word-of-mouth answer?

Thanks!!!

I've heard what WiP mentioned early in this thread - they received about 500 applicants for about 25 positions.

They are only interviewing 2-3 per position and out of staters have a really good chance, from what I hear.

Yeah, I called and they said they had 34 new grad positions. I actually turned down the interview.....hope that wasn't an incredibly stupid decision....but for a number of reasons it just didn't feel like a right fit for me. Oh well, hopefully someone else who wants the job badly will have an even better shot of getting it now if they are only interviewing 2-3 ppl for a position.

I just graduated with my BSN and left Colorado just to go to school. I am now trying to get back and have sent out 50+ resumes and applied for 20+ jobs. I also have a bachelors in social work and the feedback that I am getting from nursing recruiters is that this is a terrible, terrible time to be a new grad in that state. You had better focus on getting into one of bigger hospitals graduate nurse programs. I have my heart set on rural hospital placement and finally after 4 months, I have gotten a job offer. Start applying early, pay attention to the new graduate program deadlines and really try to set yourself apart from the masses. Good Luck!

It is extremely frustrating to have been informally "promised" a job (I know, I know, why would I believe that?) and then be let down. I do have an interview tomorrow at Planned Parenthood, so that is good. I would much rather be in a hospital, but if that isn't going to happen, PPRM is my next choice. It actually pays more than some of the hospitals in the area, oddly enough. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

At first I couldn't figure out what PPRM stood for. Then I figured it out! That would be great if you could get in there, great experience.

I think that would be an awesome job! I'd love to work for planned parenthood.

I interviewed with PPRM when I first moved here. I would love to work for them someday (will probably do so as an APN), but the hours really sucked. Every single weekend. I just couldn't commit to that, not with a husband and school-aged kids. And the pay would be a huge paycut, unless you're starting as a new grad.

I would love to do it as a supplement to a fulltime job, but the wages wouldn't work for our family as my main source of income.

Good luck to you, let us know how it went!

Well, the interview went well and they had me come job shadow. I had been told by my references that they had called and asked about me. Then at the end of my shadowing day, they told me that another applicant for the job had been working as a Health Care Assistant at PP for 4 years and would probably be hired for the position. They told me that there may be another job coming up in August and that they will probably hire from the same pool. I was feeling so optimistic when they asked me to come in and shadow.

The pay isn't terrible for a new grad (especially compared to no pay at all, which is seeming increasingly likely) and the thought of working all daytime hours and having paid holidays off was quite appealing.

I was rather disappointed, but I have another job lead at my current facility in a department that says to the no new grad rule "we do what we want!" I put in for the transfer and I am crossing my fingers.

Anyone have any other advice about where to apply as a new grad in CO? Every single listing I looked at today either said NO NEW GRADS or specified a required number of years of experience. Every single one of over 300 listings. The good news is that I have my license number posted on DORA, I got into the MSN program at UCD in CNM for the fall and my current manager is letting me work as a nurse intern for a couple of extra weeks while I am waiting for my transfer (I hope). Bad news is that my landlord let our property go into foreclosure and we will have to come up with a deposit and first months rent in a couple of months, so I feel like I have a deadline on finding a job and getting a paycheck. Depressing.

Does anyone know how long it takes for results to appear on DORA? I just took my NCLEX yesterday.
