Hello everyone! I didn't see a thread for Collin College Spring 2015 (July 31 deadline), so I thought I'd start one, especially since there seems to be a whole new point system that they will be implementing for the first time. I plan on trying to apply (also applying here in Sugar Land to WCJC and in Alvin at ACC).
I have a previous degree from Arizona for Computer Science (really doesn't do me much good! lol) but after 9yrs working in IT, I finally admitted that it wasn't fulfilling -took the leap of faith and decided to go back to school to become a nurse. My dream is to one day soon work in home hospice care.
I went to the Collin College nursing info session about a month ago (March 2014) and am taking the PSB exam on Mon May 5. I am not entirely sure how the new point system compares to the old one, but it seems like there are a lot more points involved and I wonder what this means in terms of a the new "minimum" number of points. I know before 16pts was great, 15pts was good and 14pts was iffy to get in. With the new point system, I am aiming for 29 of the 34 max points -we'll see! Does anyone know how that might stack up?
Anyone else trying to apply for Spring 2015?
Wow I didn't think to type spring 2015 in the search engine haha just thought if there was a thread it would pop up automatically. Anyways I totally understand all your pains with the new point system I think I ended up with 30 points though. From the Spring 2013 thread they didn't get their letters until October 2-3. They say 4-6 weeks weeks but rarely meet that. I'll be following this thread closely for more info good luck guys!
I've heard that each Collin College nursing class accepts about 30 students out of about 200 applicants. If that's true, that's actually a lower acceptance rate than in most medical schools. The average person accepted to med school has a 3.5 GPA and we worry about not getting into nursing school if we make one B in A&P. Of course, the medical school applicants all have bachelor's degrees, but they take a lot of fluff courses along with their 30 semester hours of biology and 8 hours of organic chemistry (that's a hard course).
It's true that few Collin College applicants will have taken honors courses (except maybe in Psych), because they were seldom offered until now. But remember that other colleges offer honors courses and this may give applicants from outside Collin a big advantage. I've heard also that A&P1 at other schools is not nearly so difficult as it is at Collin, so you can expect some applicants from other schools to be applying with all As. Sorry to sound so negative but this sudden change in the point system without providing advance notice to us is really unfair to the students at Collin. I'd write a complaint letter to the administration but then they'd deny me admission for sure.
For all of those worried I was going to apply for Spring but got into Grayson for this fall semester, even though I was at a 2 point disadvantage because of not living in Grayson County. I've been there for a month and can tell you the instructors there are great. They are very helpful and want you to succeed and will help you accomplish that. I also have some friends that are currently in the Collin nursing program and don't seem very impressed with the lectures. Don't put all your eggs in one basket because at the end of the day it doesn't matter where you go, just that you pass the NCLEX. I drive 80 miles roundtrip to get there but it was the best decision I could have made. I love it there! If someone told me I could leave Grayson right now and start at Collin without missing a beat I would tell them No way, No How.
I got my letter today and didn't get in due to "not enough points" - I had 27 out of 34 (knowing that 4 are for honors) and had a 6 on PSB. I had all A's in prereqs, I had the point for Biology, an A in Micro and 2 B's in AP classes. I'm stunned and kind of mad, but hey it is what it is. This is the first time that I applied to Collin. I did get into Grayson for Spring '14 even though I'm not a resident, didn't have Speech, got a 2 on HESI and only had 23 points .... I just sent my acceptance for Grayson. I will decide if I want to reapply to Collin in the Fall of '15, but I just an not sure. Plus sending out the letters so late makes me think they are still trying to get it together. Good Luck everyone.
Congrats MichelleGraul I also got my letter today and got accepted can't wait to meet you and all the others For future applicants here are my stats. 30/34 points (didn't take the honors courses since I had already finished those classes before they changed the point system) I submitted my application, transcript, and immunization records no extra fluff (certificates, letters of recommendations, etc.) I also didn't have all my vaccines done just started the ones that take months to complete. Got 6 points on the PSB. Didn't have a previous degree and don't live in Collin County but did take core classes and prereqs at Collin College. Umm I think that's everything that would be helpful. I'm sorry you didn't get in txmidwife but at least you got into Grayson and you will still end up with the same result: a nurse :)

When people start getting their letters, could you start posting that you've received it? I am a little confused to the "letter will go out at the beginning of October" statement. If the deadline for applications was July 31st and the letters are supposed to be arriving 6 weeks after that date, then isn't October too long. Shouldn't the letters be arriving in the middle of September, which is a few weeks from now? :)
