Collin College ADN Spring 2015

Published

Hello everyone! I didn't see a thread for Collin College Spring 2015 (July 31 deadline), so I thought I'd start one, especially since there seems to be a whole new point system that they will be implementing for the first time. I plan on trying to apply (also applying here in Sugar Land to WCJC and in Alvin at ACC).

I have a previous degree from Arizona for Computer Science (really doesn't do me much good! lol) but after 9yrs working in IT, I finally admitted that it wasn't fulfilling -took the leap of faith and decided to go back to school to become a nurse. My dream is to one day soon work in home hospice care.

I went to the Collin College nursing info session about a month ago (March 2014) and am taking the PSB exam on Mon May 5. I am not entirely sure how the new point system compares to the old one, but it seems like there are a lot more points involved and I wonder what this means in terms of a the new "minimum" number of points. I know before 16pts was great, 15pts was good and 14pts was iffy to get in. With the new point system, I am aiming for 29 of the 34 max points -we'll see! Does anyone know how that might stack up?

Anyone else trying to apply for Spring 2015?

The bonus points?

I did not hear it from any particular person, per say, but since they didn't even offer a bonus program before I can't see them getting many if any applicants with those points. Plus Collin hasn't offered many honors over the years. Just Psyc and English II and Govt and Hist. I haven't seen any offers for Honors Biol's classes before. Plus I spoke with the Honors Institute last week and one of the guys told me they don't even have an instructor for A&P I-II yet. So it may not be in the spring either. Don't quote me though. I'm just going off what was told to me.

I'm interested to see how many people apply. I hope that this thread picks up and convo's start. Only then will we know where we stand.

6 weeks is going to take forever! LOL I wish we could know by tomorrow. :(

^^( Post #9) That was a huge typo and wish I could delete that. LOL

I clarified a little in a different post.

Sorry! I hit post too soon then I went to edit it and got on the phone and then it wouldn't let me after an hour and now I can't delete :(

I applied with 29pts (missed 1pt for not having completed A&P II yet, & no honors). Heard we won't find anything out until mid-Oct, so it will be a while!

I had the same thoughts..noone knew about these extra points and anyone in our applicant pool is way beyond those courses. I guess it just depends on how many usual honors students are applying who would have taken honors everything anyway?

The waiting for the PSB results were more nerve racking for me! At this point I know I have done the best I could have, so it all depends on how this new point system will pan out.

I have 29 points going in...no honors courses and missing a point for not having Micro under my belt yet. At least I'll have that to keep my mind occupied beginning next semester ;)

Well you're better off than me! Congrats on the GPA! That's awesome. I really wish stats and soci still counted. I was banking nk those A's to help my GPA. Luckily I don't have any C's on my transcript but I do have a couple of B's. With that being said, I also don't have micro and will be taking in the fall. Who are you signed up for?? I really want to take Katie Johnson at CPC but no one knows she is actually

teaching in the fall so she like 4 people in her class. :-(

I have 25 points. It seems so low compared to 34. I am making myself sick with worry and doubt. I got a perfect 6 on PSB so I am hoping that pulls some weight.

I'm taking Carroll Bottoms at Preston Ridge. I have some friends taking micro with Prof. Johnson now, I'll ask them about her teaching in the fall...she has classes listed online for registering? I'll let you know what I find out.

Keep your head up! I know it is hard not to make yourself a nervous wreck...the unknown is the worst! Good luck, I'll have my fingers crossed for you :)

Prof. Johnson is teaching micro in the fall...registration opens up again tomorrow (today it is down because early registration ended yesterday) so get the class while you can! Supposed to open back up at 8am. Good luck!

Hi everyone,

I applied for the Spring 2015 application pool and like the rest of you who have posted did not take any Honor's courses so I am lacking those 4 points. I am overall really upset with this new point system. Since we are the first set of applicants to use it it's frustrating not knowing the average number of points that are needed to get in. I did however speak to someone at the Nursing Department the other day and she let me know that most of the applicants in this selection process had not taken Honors courses because previously there was no need to. I just find the whole thing frustrating. I have been going to Collin for quite a while now (I have already earned my associates) and it is a bit irritating that while you are on a path for a degree they can change up the selection process.

I do have one question for you guys, do you know if these 10 points:

The applicant must have an overall cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above from all college courses completed and applicable to the nursing degree plan at Collin College.

Only include Composition 1, Humanities, Life Span and General Psychology? The reason I am asking is I have taken a number of other courses (Government, History, Statistics, Chem...etc) and am confused as to whether or not to include them into my GPA?

Thanks ladies and GOOD LUCK!!

One more thing: I see for the "Prereqs" the courses need to have been completed within the last 5 years but do the courses applicable to the nursing degree plan need to have been completed in the last 5 years? (The reason for my question is that I took General Psychology 6 years ago and do not know if I should include it into my overall GPA or if I will need to retake)

Sorry for such a long post!

I took Dr. Bottoms for Mirco SHE IS AMAZING!!!

Ok they are factoring GPA for AP1 AP2 and Micro .. get up to 10 points for this. These three courses MUST be completed within 5 years of the START of the program.

Overall GPA is for all your pre-reqs AND English, Psych 1 and 2, and Humanities elective. These core classes do not have an expiration date. ONLY MATH AND SCIENCE CLASSES.. and you get up to 10 points for these 8 classes as well.

1 pt for Biol 1406

up to 3 (1) for for each pre-req

up to 10 for GPA for pre-reqs

up to 10 for all pre-reqs and co-reqs

up to 6 for PSB

up to 4 for honors *which NONE of our applicant pool will count since I doubt anyone took them since we didn't need to

= 34

I hope that helps!! :)

PS one of my friends used to work in the DH office so she explained how they do points. Most programs are the same backbone just different #'s.

ok thanks so much! thanks for clearing that up!

I've given up on Collin and their ever changing admission requirements. It's funny they dropped stats as a pre-reg and have now added these honor courses for points. IMO They just want more money from you to retake classes you already completed. Good luck to you all! I start Grayson in August as I received a late call that a spot had opened up and I was accepted.
