College of the Canyons nursing Fall 2015

Published

Hello everyone!

Felt the need to make this thread as I couldn't find one for the upcoming Fall semester at COC. Latest one was for Spring of this year but I'm applying for Fall 2015.

Hope that it eventually helps those that are applying/waiting.

Just turned in my application to COC. Also applied to AVC. Curious to as how everyone is feeling throughout this whole process.

I've taken the TEAS test already through AVC and scored an 83%. I've got a 3.0 GPA for A&P and micro. Overall GPA of 3.3. First time applying to both schools. Super anxious to hear back from both schools. Fingers crossed!!!

Anyone still planning on working while in the program? Also, anyone commenting from Palmdale/Lancaster if they do get in?

@evee2212

thank you you for that suggestion! Whatever bargain we can get is a plus lol especially when it comes to books :) I don't have access to the DM's so would u mind sharing the titles of the three books or providing me with your email?

Thanks for the suggestions @evee2212. I was wondering what other things you might suggest like stethoscopes and any other additional tools you feel would benefit.

I would recommend 3M Littmann Classic II S.E Stethoscope. The prices can vary from 60ish-100ish depending on the color and finish you want. Here's the link on amazon Amazon.com: 3M Littmann Classic II S.E. Stethoscope, Smoke-Finish Chestpiece, Black Tube, 28 inch, 2827SM: Industrial & Scientific Also a good pair of bandage scissors will come in handy. And a bunch of multicolor pens the ones that have 4-6 colors in one pen will definitely help :). Feel free to ask me more questions!

I just finished my first semester with COC. I am very pleased with the program. All the instructors are great. I had Corbett and Carrillo. The whole nursing staff is great. It may feel overwhelming with all the paperwork but they help you every step. If you guys have any questions let me know.

Hi @studleygrl99 I noticed from last semesters forum that you were commuting from Torrance area. If that is still accurate I was wondering how your commute was for the first semester?

Hey former 1st semester COC nursing student.... any insight on the "success in fundamentals nursing elective" course? It is recommended, so I am wondering if any of you found it to be helpful or vise versa?

Littman lightweight stethoscope from Amazon works really well for me. Don't waste money on blood pressure cuff. They provide you with one. You will only use it in skills lab first 6 weeks. You will need a pen light too!

I hate to say but the success class wasn't really beneficial. Don't waste your time. Use that time and study on your own. Sadly everyone in our success dreaded going. The only thing that was helpful was when we had practice questions for upcoming exams. But these questions were sometimes pulled from out of the online resources from the textbooks :/

I agree with other. Success was not helpful at all. Most only took it for financial aid purposes as it gave them more units. However, once you are in third semester and if you are lucky enough to get Professor Houghton then you SHOULD definitely take success with her. It helps greatly with her test.
