Anyone applying to COC Nursing program Fall 2016?
I wish I didn't live so far away from the Glendale area (I live in Acton), a night and weekend program would be great for me! As far as I can tell the first semester is the most hectic and you are at school a full 5 days. It slows down after that first semester to 2-3 days the following semesters. I am sure they will go over all the questions at orientation.
See everyone on the 20th. What is everyone's name? My name is Melissa...might make it easier to spot everyone.
Congrats! I got into the standard program. Can you tell me your decisions over picking GCC over COC?
First, its 4miles away from home. Second, I know three people already in the program and they are telling me how great it is. 3rd, nclex ratings are 5% over COC. Honestly, its mainly due to how close the school is to me. If I lived in valencia/santa clarita, I would most likely go with coc.
Well I just got accepted at GCC!! So now I don't know what to do! I will need to look into that program more. I have been really excited about COC though.Did anyone receive an email back after confirming their attendance for the orientation? I didn't get a reply and just want to make sure that they received my acceptance.
Congrats to your GCC acceptance! GCC is another amazing program in the area. I really wanted to apply but my AP scores didn't come in time
I also didn't receive a reply to my acceptance email. I got worried so I sent it twice haha.
Welcome and congrats! :) From what I can tell, the first semester of nursing school is anywhere from 1-2 days of theory and 1-2 days of clinicals. Every program is different but from what I've heard from other nursing students and attending orientations for a few programs, you will be doing something (either at school or the hospital) 4-5 days of the week. Some schools will start right away in clinicals and some will wait a few weeks for everyone to pass the dosage and calculation test before sending us to the hospitals. I think that is kind of what COC does but again I'm not sure! Anyways yes they will answer all of that at orientation but I'm totally with you there on wanting to know what to expect. Can't wait to meet you and everyone else! :)
The first 8 or 9 weeks is Nursing 112. It is 5 days a week. 2 days are 3 hour lectures of Theory and Pharm, 1 day is like a 6 hour Pharm lab, the remaining 2 days is skills lab for like 7 hours each day.
Once you conquer the practicums and dosage tests, you move on to N114. Skills lab is replaced with clinical days at the hospital, and you will no longer have the pharm lab. It will be 4 days a week in 114.
Hope this helps.
My advice: Enjoy your summer, enjoy the free time you have. Because in all honesty, you will probably see your classmates and books more than your family/friends/dog during first semester. Make friends with everyone, and really make friends with your clinical group because the more you enjoy and like your peers, the better your clinical experience will be. You're all in this together and everyone should be rooting for eachother. It's so much better to have people you can go up to and ask dumb questions, vent, or just ask for help and have that confidence to do so. Clinicals can be nerve racking, so having a supportive group is beneficial.
