College Algebra 08/19

Published

I can't believe that on top of the $500 plus course, $175 text books, I have to pay to have my test and final exam proctored and have to go out and buy a web cam! I really wish this would have been passed on to me as I would have not even enrolled in UTA. I suck at math and was not looking to spend this awful amount of money to hopefully pass Algebra. I'm hoping the video lectures show me step by step how to work out the problems or I am in trouble. Might have to transfer to Texas Tech, they don't even require Algebra.

Has anyone registered complaints with UTA over the requirement to take college algebra with the RN to BSN program? I'm just wondering if we all banded together and worked on getting this dropped if we could actually get that done? I have already taken statistics, so why this class? This program is supposed to be for working nurses, and already they make us take extra classes that really we shouldn't (literature??? Texas Government???) I have two degree's already coming into this program, so why the extra?

If this is truly for working nurses then cut out the superfluous classes (college algebra) and get on with the nursing classes that matter. I'm fine with the government class, and the literature if the college algebra requirement is dropped. Make it statistics and leave it at that!!! I don't have hours and hours to pour over college algebra homework, set up proctored tests that cost money per test. I work around 50 + hours per week. I am planning to take this at a local community college but I shouldn't have to do that. This is a good program otherwise, but the college algebra is really not something I need as I have statistics. I could have gone to another university for my RN to BSN, and many of them do not have the stats AND college algebra requirement.

How are you brave people doing who are still in this? Anyone still surviving? :)

This is the worst class ever, just finished the 8 week college algebra and did not pass any of the tests, I spend maybe 30 hours a week just finishing the homework then you have two chances to pass the quiz, you have no time to study for the tests, which are proctored and you are set up for failure. I was suppose to graduate and now because of this class I am not. I am so upset this program will now take me 3 years to complete because of this class.

They have now added a 15 week course as well as the 8 week course, if any of you take this class I would recommend it. It does seem like many other colleges are adding algebra to their curriculum as well which is unfortunate for us. The UTA RN to BSN is really a great program I made it through all the classes and am in the top 10% with my grades but this class has made me feel like I am stupid, it is just too much to learn to fast. I struggled the whole way through even cried :((( Don't be like me and let this class be one of your last, take it early and take the 15 week, good luck to all of you!!!!

I have the same emotional frustration. I am in week 1 of this class, and if I dont pass this class, I will not graduate in June. The homework seems like an overwhelming amount to only contribute to 20% of your grade, the Proctored tests accounts for 50% and the final 30%~ Im not sure how anyone who is working actually passes this class without being a math genieus, and if we were, we would not be in Nursing. ugh! Im am trying to decide to sink or swim?? any tips for success in the class?

Lauriev,

Thanks for your honesty. I am really sorry that you went through 8 weeks of the stress of this class and did not pass! I, too, did well in all of my other courses, but this one had me in tears and totally stressed and unable to do anything else but study, so I dropped (again). I, too, would have graduated in May, and wanted to so badly that decided I would soldier through this course no matter if it killed me. I went nuts trying to work, raise my family, sleep, and study - and all during the first week!

In the end, I realized graduating a few months later was better than 8 weeks of torture. So, maybe we'll be in class together in the fall. I plan to take the 15 week course in August and I will be ready. I know I can do the work, just not in such a small time frame.

Imedicatu,

I wish you the best. Maybe see how the quiz goes this weekend and gauge your progress. March 31 is the drop without penalty date. When I looked at the average time per question, which was about 4 minutes for the quiz, that's when I started to have doubts for me. I knew I needed to get my speed per question up. I really hope you make it, though! Let us know how it goes.

Hi all,

I'm getting nervous for this class. I start August 25th for the 15 week course. Maybe we can all help each other out some how. What book are we suppose to get? It gives me the option for 2? Do i get them both or the package? I'm confused.... Plus i'm worried about juggling this class with my 3 RN jobs..

Cara, you are not alone. I will equally start august 25th, We will find a way to helo each other.

I'm thinking of dropping it and taking it at a community college. Have any of you guys done that and was it easier at a Community college?

Cara

I am another starter on August 25th -- I think the 15 week course is going to be more managable than the 8 week. All reputable colleges request college Algebra nowadays, I passed calculus 1 with a D back in college and I suffered all the way through, so I am getting geared up to suffer through this as well. I am just going to get additional help like algebra for dummies etc.

Cara,

I bought the book and it was expensive (loose, unbound, not user friendly), but if you have a good algebra reference already, you may want to save some money and just purchase the online access from My Math Lab, which is the required online access code for the course. It gives all the homework and quizzes with examples. The course (in blackboard) provides printed examples of required problems and how-to videos. It is, however, still HARD. I am taking the plunge Aug 25 (2014) with you guys. I hope we can support and encourage each other through this.

I did the 15 weeks class. It is a tough class. Just keep up with your homeworks as they are graded and used towards your final grade. PM if you need help!

Jadiva,

Thank you for your post. What book/books are they using? any other materials to buy? please let me know so that I can start looking for them on time.

thank you..
