Nurses General Nursing

So I know this show has been discussed here already.

Unfortunately I just sat through an episode. One thing that really stood out to me as being SUPER unrealistic, I mean part from the many, many obvious things, is physicians confronting patients and their families. Apperently in TV land the hospital's reimbursement is NOT tied to patient satisfaction like it is the the real world.

I can't imagine any physician who makes it a point to speak confrontationly to patient or their families would keep his job.

Specializes in School Nursing, Hospice,Med-Surg.

Yes, I love how nurses are always at the nurse's station on the phone and the docs are doing all the dirty work. Sometimes there are 3 docs surrounding the patient and completely involved in the patient's personal story. Riiiiight.

I always laugh when I watch greys anatomy and see attending surgeons take vitals, hang IV meds and ambulate patients.

I'm always curious as to why there is never an accurate portrayal of nurses on TV? We don't just sit at a nurses station and say "yes doctor".

Have you seen Call the Midwife? It's set in the late 50s/early 60s, but it focuses on the nurses and portrays a lot of aspects of nursing care quite accurately. They also have a practicing midwife as their medical consultant who makes sure the sciencey stuff is accurate.

It's super sentimental and romantic and addictive...not good for my studies but at least I see a lot of my course content unfolding on screen. I'm always excited when I correctly get the diagnosis or predict the next intervention.

I got a good laugh out of that.

Despite all these valid criticisms, I still like this show and find it a lot more accurate than many other medical shows.

Specializes in ER.

It took me a few minutes to realize that this was a TV show.

Specializes in Peds, School Nurse, clinical instructor.

I tried to watch the first show but after the Doctor called for paralytics on a cardiac arrest patient I turned it off...:dead:

Specializes in burn ICU, SICU, ER, Trauma Rapid Response.

The most accurate portrait of nurses I have ever seen in a TV show is Nurse Jackie.

Even though it is unrealistic I actually love this show lol I like that it's more action and less relationship drama. And when watching with my family I always just say realistically a doctor would never do that but that would be nice if they did.

Are you sure? I found nurse jackie pretty unrealistic.

The most accurate portrayal of nurses on a U.S program was E.R in my opinion.

I finally watched the first few episodes of "Code Black". Even though it's unrealistic, I like the high intensity action.

I don't understand why the ER is so poorly lit?

Not saying Nurse Jackie is realistic, just more so when compared to Code Black, House, GA, and the other medical shows. It at least shows nurses doing nurse things.

Or when a MD ordered TPA as the patient passed by her after being unloaded from the ambulance, based solely on his slurred speech.

I turned it back on later, and actually it has grown on me, as dopey as it is.

Specializes in PICU.

I know I'm not commenting on the same show (haven't seen it...probably won't), but can we talk about how the ER on Gray's Anatomy is always staffed by surgeons? They're triaging, treating and there happens to be 7 surgeons running a code? I would think even Doc's would be super annoyed by this! I get that they are going to promote docs on these shows, but these are all surgical residents and attendings so it gets even more specific and unrealistic.
