After studying for two grueling weeks non-stop for the CNOR exam, I took it yesterday. AND PASSED!!! Just wanted to do a little happy dance and share with my e-colleagues the good news!:hpygrp:
Sandra-it isn't so much the pay that prompted me to get this certification but rather the knowledge that I gained from it. I had to study, study some more and then study again. It was a difficult exam. As you know, certain policies and traditional practices change depending on where you work, and this exam helped me to know without a doubt that some of the practices that have been followed are WRONG. For example, my hospital will steam flash cameras. WRONG. Now I can feel confident about changing some of the practices because I have this knowledge and can pull the AORN standards to prove it.
A CNOR certification will also enable you to move up the clinical tier. You are much more likely to be considered for this promotional change if you are certified. You should do it!

This might be a silly question.. but when is it an appropriate time to take the CNOR exam as a peri-op nurse? Is it mandatory to have this to practice in the OR in some places?
Congrats to the original poster-- sounds like it was a difficult test!!
