This might be a silly question.. but when is it an appropriate time to take the CNOR exam as a peri-op nurse? Is it mandatory to have this to practice in the OR in some places?

Congrats to the original poster-- sounds like it was a difficult test!!

Specializes in Peri-Op.

you can take it after 2 years full time in the OR

I have never seen it posted as a mandatory requirement, just something that is respected and preferred by employers....

Specializes in L&D, OR, travel.

AND lest we forget - CNOR and other certifications are greatly tied in with Magnet hospitals and those that are seeking same. So your certification will be recognized and should be paid by for in those hospitals. I'm a Travel RN now and I think it has opened some doors.

Congrats!!!! I keep thinking about doing it then never do. We get an extra $1 an hour.

Specializes in Trauma Surgery, Nursing Management.

Sandra-it isn't so much the pay that prompted me to get this certification but rather the knowledge that I gained from it. I had to study, study some more and then study again. It was a difficult exam. As you know, certain policies and traditional practices change depending on where you work, and this exam helped me to know without a doubt that some of the practices that have been followed are WRONG. For example, my hospital will steam flash cameras. WRONG. Now I can feel confident about changing some of the practices because I have this knowledge and can pull the AORN standards to prove it.

A CNOR certification will also enable you to move up the clinical tier. You are much more likely to be considered for this promotional change if you are certified. You should do it!

I really think I will as soon as I get this Service Leader promotion a little under my belt.

What reviewer did you use? I plan to take the cnor as well. Congrats!

Congratulations!

anyway, i am planning to take the exam on may this year. i just want to ask, what were the review materials you used and do you recommend the aorn's book?

Congrats to you on passing CNOR exam!

It is a hard exam, but worth the effort. I took my test in 2005 after being a peri op nurse for 10 years. A lot of my questions were Ortho, positioning, drugs and eyeblocks.

Congratulations canesdukegirl on passing your CNOR exam! I am happy and proud for you. From what I see you help out so many (including me) on this site that it is nice to see good news for you. You earned this and I hope you had a big party to celebrate!
