CNA challenging the LVN NCLEX

:uhoh21: I am thinking of challenging the LVN NCLEX. How possible is this? I have 16 years in home health and hospital setting as a CNA. What should I concentrate on to study?

Are you in CA or TX? I know CA has different ways to obtain your LVN license but TX will not allow anyone to challange the NCLEX unless they are a medic in the service. If you find you can take the test, then a good med-surg book, pharm book and maybe a NCLEX book...

Contact your state BON and find out if this is possible. In almost all state and all cases it is not possible to challenge the boards. If it is, then I would consider contacting a local LVN program and getting their book list and maybe see if you can get a sylabus with learning objectives and go from there. Also get an NCLEX book. good luck.

in Louisiana one of the requirements for taking board is a minimum # of hours in an approved shools..you may be able to challenge certain subjects in the school check with school and with bon in your state

Well okie dokie then. I knew at one time that service medics could challange the test...I guess I need to catch up....

Medical Corpsmen can challenge the PN exam in California and Virginia only. Those are the only two states, and those licenses cannot transfer to another state.

For any other state, you cannot challenge the PN exam, you are required to complete a minimum amount of hours in an approved school of nursing, makes no difference how many years of experience that you have in the field.

Same thing for RN students that wish to take the PN exam while they are in school; they are not challenging the exam. The only way that they can write the exam is if they have completed the minimum amount of required hours in each of the subject areas that are required in PN programs. No other way. And not all states permit it anymore, either.

LOL...Well I guess i just blew this out of the water.... I stand corrected . I know at one point I was looking at it on one of the BON sites and I thought it was Tx....

Thanks to everyone for the replies. I contacted the state BON and the state of CA allows you to challenge with the pharmaceutical class and 51 months of experience. The Liscense is non transferable and this won't due as I'm moving to AZ. Thanks again.

I have never seen one person challenge the PN exam for CA if they were not a corpsmen in the miliary.

Even though you have been in the field for years, that does not count as what is needed for the PN exam.

And as stated before, it is only good in CA and cannot be endorses to any other state.

There is NO nursing board in the USA that will allow anyone without proper education to sit for the NCLEX - PN or RN.

Evidently CA will let you with experience and a pharmacology course, but it can not be transferred out of state.
