CNA base pay

U.S.A. Oklahoma

So I'm thinking about getting a job as a CNA while I go through nursing school and I'm just curious about what the average pay is for a CNA in Tulsa. I've heard it's between $8.00-$10.00/hr... Is it more likely to be $8.00/hr?

That's cool, but we're in Oklahoma! ;)

Specializes in Chemo, Telemetry, Hem/Onc.

Yes, I realize that. There are VA hospitals all over the country, and I'm sure that even in Oklahoma, the salary for NA's are better than most. Find out for yourself :)

Oh.. Ok. What is a VA hospital? I would love for you to explain it to me!

Specializes in Level III cardiac/telemetry.

VA's are Veterans Administration hospitals. It's where vets can go for treatment. I think there is one in Oklahoma, maybe 2. There are several VA clinics though.

Specializes in Hospice, Nursing Education, Primary Care.

There is a VA Hospital in Muskogee. Jobs can be seen at http://www.federaljobsearch.com/cat/OK_health_medicine_job_1.asp?cid=0&tid=1

I would doubt they are going to pay enough higher than in Tulsa enough to offset the cost of driving to Muskogee but you never know...

I will start my CNA training at Interim HealthCare in Tulsa Ok on March 29th, I did not realize they are a temp agency too. Will it be possible for me to get a job immediatly after class with that company? Do you know what they start the pay at for the grave yard shift?

Specializes in ICU.

I started as a Nurse Aide at OSUMedical Center in Tulsa almost 2 years ago with absolutely NO experience. I was paid 9.00/hour, and the first month was all training, 8 hours a day 5 days a week of lecture, then 3 12-hour clinical shifts a week "shadowing." Then we were tested, hired on, got a raise to 9.25/hour, and got to go straight to work where we had been doing our clinicals! It's a fantastic way to get into a hospital, and paid training - who can argue with that?! It is not a certified program, though, so when I wanted the "C" to go in front of that "NA" I did have to take another short course and sit for the state CNA exam, which was a breeze after the training and experience I had from OSUMC.

It's a fantastic hospital to work at, and since it's a teaching hospital, there's always something to see and learn, and everyone, from doctors to nurses to RT and OT and PT, is always willing to answer questions! I worked for a year on a telemetry floor as a Nurse Aide, then cross-trained to the monitor room as a dysrhythmia tech, and now I work for the cardiovascular department (I do mostly rapid responses since I work 3p-11p) and I LOVE it! Tons of opportunity for growth, experience, and education here. And decent money. And great people.

Thank you so much for the information!! Could you tell me where I would need to go to apply? That is so exciting! I would love to get paid and trained at the same time. I am wanting the 11pm-7am shift, after I was trained would it be easy to get those hours? I'm glad to hear you love your job so much! Do you still get paid $9.25 after all you can do?

Specializes in 6 yrs LTC, 1 yr MedSurg, Wound Care.

I took my CNA training through Interim (Loved it!!) but they told us that they can't hire us for at least 6 months after completing the class. I can't remember what the reason was. I did meet a couple of girls that worked for Interim, when I took the CPR class, and they seemed to like it well enough.

Hi, qpooh 75! I would love to talk to you about getting on at St Francis South ( Formally Heart Hospital) I am starting my CNA training next month and this is where I want to work when I come out of class. But I really don't know where to start on getting hired, did you get on fairly easy without experience, and how long did it take once you applied to start work? Thanks

I got my CNA through Interim just last month, I loved their classes! They changed some things from when I worked for them before though. I had let my license lapse so had to take classes again. They used to hire you right out of CNA school if you took training through them. Now they don't. The other temp agencies in Tulsa, Nursefinders, Robinson, First Call, etc won't hire you without 6 months experience within the last 3 years. So, I went to TMPS, went through their orientation, and have been waiting for almost a week with no shifts available. I heard St. John's starts CNA's out at 13+ for night weekends with no experience. Food for thought.

Thanks girls!! My class starts Aug 9th-24th, I've already applied with FlexNursing, they start CNA's out pretty good I heard buy have not been interveiwed yet, but I will definatly check with St Johns, especially since they are opening the new Hospital in BA by my house :). I have really been looking/calling around checking pay scales, so I will soon update where I land!!!
