  1. I don't work in labor and delivery, but I was having a discussion with a couple nurses tonight about how our deliveries with our children were. . . Well I got to my story, about how the nurses were telling me to "hold it in" because the doctor hadn't arrived and how badly I wanted to push but five mins. later fortunately the doc arrived (I don't think I could've held out much longer) and I began to push. Then the other two nurses said "I learned how to deliver a baby in NS, didn't you?" And I told them well, no not exactly. I had learned all about pregnancy and what to do in what situation, and I guess if the situation ever DID occur, I could probably safely deliver a baby. But no, no formal training. So am I the only nurse who DIDN'T learn how to deliever a baby in school?? I am pretty sure, (unless I missed a lab) that NO this was not an objective!!
  2. Also, I want to mention, it wouldn't be a big deal for me to notify the DON, or straight up tell this person myself to get lost if I wasn't so new. Again, I am very new and I would really hate to already look like I am a problem. I know that's really a dumb thing to say because I am not responsible for this. But, I also know how important first impressions are. I just don't want to cause a scene.
  3. This is not really related to nursing, per-se, but I have just started a new job as a nurse. I mean, I have been at this job for 2 weeks tomorrow. I am already stressed to the max and questioning everything I do and feeling inadequate as expected for a new nurse, and suddenly I have another problem. Apparently I have a stalker, who also happens to be the night shift security guard. I work at a retirement community in the skilled nursing facility. According to the night shift nurse who relieves me, he comes in every night and asks about me. This has apparently been going on for a week. She just told me 2 nights ago. I pretty much blew it off thinking oh just a crush, and told her to let him know that I am married and have children. Well tonight she came in and told me that she let him know. Well according to her he came in the very next night asking more about me. So obviously that didn't detour him and she hasn't been very specific about what he has been asking about me, but she did mention he wanted to know what my last name was. I specifically told her not to tell him and not let him back into the nurses station (where he could find my name). Then RIGHT after this discussion, he waltzes in the unit, 3 hours before he is scheduled to be on duty and circled around the facility about 4 times. I jetted out before he reached the nurses station each time to avoid him. Really, he has no reason to be in our area of the facility unless called upon. Normally security just hangs out at the gatehouse. Also what is interesting, this same person randomly contacted me on myspace about a year ago, I also told him then that I had a family he continued to try and talk to me, it was always friendly and never seemed questionable, but I decided to stop all conversation with him because it didn't seem right, obviously because I am married and he is some random person. So that was the end of that. WELL, this person has been working at this facility for 3 months now but for whatever reason just took his orientation on the SAME DAY as mine. They have orientation quite often, about once a week. It is a very large facility. Could he have somehow known I would be going to orientation on that day??? Am I overreacting? Or should I be worried???
  4. How cool is this! I didn't know TCC offered that! How does it work? Are you actually in the same classes as the TCC nursing program students or is it separate? How many levels of the program do you take at TCC before moving over to OU?? This is great! Would love more info.
  5. Not quite sure I understand.. Does that mean if I take the NLN tests and pass then does it waive some of the gen ed courses or what? What exactly does "advanced standing" mean and you get 30 credit hours of what? Maybe I'm just super slow today...
  6. Just curious to see if anyone got into the lpn-bsn program at OU Tulsa. I am going to finish up my pre-reqs and then apply soon. I currently have a 3.47 gpa, but I still have about 6 pre-reqs to take so I can probably bring it up if I really try hard!
  7. This is kind of a late follow up, but I completed my externship at Hillcrest and feel that it was an excellent learning experience. The nurses were extremely helpful and absolutely adore the manager! Very friendly people there on 6 tower/Cardiac. When I returned to school for my final semester I worked part time and actually got paid more as a tech than an extern! I am grateful for my experience at Hillcrest. I intend on staying there a long time!
  8. I got in with a GPA of 3.76 and had all of the pre-reqs completed. Also, be sure you have taken anatomy and physiology seperate. That is one issue I had to talk my way out of since I took it together. Fortunately they let me get in. Only because I took the class before they made that rule. Also, it helps to have taken the PCT course at TCC, however I got in with a CNA from Tulsa Tech. I also took Chem 1 instead of principles. i was such a go-getter then. Too bad I have lost my ambition. I dropped this semester completely. My LAST semester. I was so close. I have decided to take p-nclex and then look for a lpn to rn-bsn program.
  9. TCC goes by a point system. They take the number of applicants and rank them according to their GPA as well as the amount of prerequisite course work completed. They also take into account the GPA of your science courses by themselves and then the others. You have the best chance of getting in if you have completed all of the prerequisites at the time you apply and if you have a GPA of 3.5+. However, with that being said, I have talked to people in my class who got in with a substantially lower GPA and with classes taken on the side during nursing school.Honestly, it's hard to say. Just do good in your science courses and apply and see what they say!
  10. Sorry, I guess that last post wasn't exactly encouraging! The truth is, if you want something bad enough, anything is possible. Mind over matter, right? It is hard but who said nursing school was supposed to be easy? I think your class will probably be better constructed than mine. Since we were the "guinea pig" class, meaning they changed the curriculum and our class was the first to go all the way through it. Our class representives have been wonderful in giving lots of feedback to the intructors about what needs to be done differently. So hopefully the next generation nursing students will have it better than us! Good luck to you! Let me know if there are any other questions you have. I'll do my best to help!
  11. I would not recommend TCC to my worst enemy. I am a level 4 nursing student at TCC, so I can tell you first hand what it is like. MOST of the instructors don't give a crap about the students. They could care less about what they have to say. Here is a letter from our class representative that she sent out to our class.. this should give you a clue as to what we have been through: To those of you who were not aware, the committee that accredits our program held open forum meetings yesterday at the Southeast Campus, one at noon and one at 4 o'clock. I was able to attend the 4 o'clock meeting and brought out several concerns that have been discussed recently. First to all of you in Psych, thank you for your thoughts and your signatures, they were delivered to the committee. To those of you unaware of the meeting, rest assured everything was brought out in the open about this program: the lack of instruction, the unrealistic workload, the instructors behaving as adversaries, the fact that our class has been guinea-pigged throughout this entire program, and just the unavailability of the instructors overall.(I did say there were a few instructors that weren't like that.) I also brought up the issue of the resources that the instructors make their power points from and the Anystream lectures. I let the committee know that we are only provided a powerpoint from the instructor and our required text (although we all have many more additional materials...especially the optional ones)..if an instructor is going to pull from outside resources we should have every single one of those resources made available to us. Also I brought out the, in my opinion, the mis-use of the Anystream video lectures. It was my belief that these were to be used to GO BACK TO LOOK AT LECTURE...not be the only form of lecture we get at all...someone made the comment that this isn't a telecourse..I agree. I didn't even know what to say about our wonderful films we've been watching, and the instructor applying cosmetics in the back. So, the point of this was to let you all know, someone does care about the success of the students in our school. This committee was very receptive and very kind. I learned that few other students on any level were aware of this meeting. In my meeting there were about 6 prospective students, a level one student, and a former instructor(who had obviously been retired for a very long time.) In the noon meeting I was told that there were a couple students from both level 2 & 3. It is my understanding that the committee will be presenting a preliminary finding to the instructors today, and then again on Monday. If you have any questions for me, please ask. I was very proud to be there and represent all nursing students, whether they have made this far w/ us or not. Thank you all. It has been a struggle to say the least. This semester, 2/3 of our class is failing at least one class of three. Our class started out with 83 students we are now down to 32. I know of a few, including myself, who have dropped a class this semester.
  12. Last semester in pediatrics our instructors let us do the same thing also except the group score was not YOUR score. First of all you had to have passed the test to get extra points. Then depending if the group score was 90% you'd get 1 extra point added to your test. so if you passed the test you took individually and received a 76%, add the extra collaberative point your group earned and you got a 77%. Or if your group got a 95% that was 2 points bumping your grade to a 78%, if it was 100%- 3 points. Keep in mind, only those who had passed their test were eligible to receive the extra 1-3 points earned as a group. I am sure what you are talking about is similar to the way our class testing was set up. And surely it's nothing to "notify the newspaper" about.
  13. Well, as it turns out I have accepted a position this summer as a nurse extern in cardiac telemetry and I am enjoying the experience thus far. Plus, they are building a new heart hospital, the "Heart Pavillion" and it will be the largest heart hospital in Oklahoma. It opens in the fall of next year. I can't wait, it will be super nice!

Oh.. Ok. What is a VA hospital? I would love for you to explain it to me!

That's cool, but we're in Oklahoma!
