Ok, I had an offer to work at a level 1 trauma ER, magnet status hospital, my DREAM job...however, there is no sign on bonus, wheras at a different hospital in my area, I could work and have a 12,000 dollar bonus (over the course of 3 years). Everyone tells me I'm crazy not to go to this other hospital, however, there are no jobs there that I'm interested in, and their ER positions are already filled. do you think I'm being crazy to give that up? Is it more important to go where your enthusiastic about or where your gonna make bigger bucks? thanks!
as others have posted, there is usually a reason for sign on bonuses....(hard to retain nurses). another consideration may be the benefits offered at each place.
i went with the job i thought i'd love even though another hospital paid better. i am only 3 weeks into it, but am so happy with my choice! coworkers are great and i am passionate about work each day. best of luck to you! ~jess
I have never had the pleasure to be in an area where jobs were plentiful and there for the taking. While it would be nice to have a dream job, at the point I'm at, I am happy to get an offer of employment and pray that I'm not going into another bad place. Once on the job, I try to make the best of it and usually get most of my personal satisfaction from my patients.
no amount of money will make a crappy job, un-crappy
hence why i left chemical engineering to come to school for nursing...
but like someone above mentioned, if you can't pay your bills and still have money to eat, you're dream job isn't going to be your dream job when you get your car repossesed
I was offered two jobs while still in school. Both in my 'dream' area, NICU. One facility impressed me with their commitment to helping new grads transition into "real nurses" with the Versant RN residency program. The other facility would have taken me right out of school with just an IP and trained me for about 5 weeks. The position I took gave me a 5 month orientation period! Although it paid a few dollars less and is a non-union hospital, I couldn't be happier here. I know I made the best decision, and it wasn't based on money!!

The job, assuming the salary is reasonable. I am just starting my RN but when I am done my top priority is a good orientation in a hospital that is not a nightmare to work at. I think that this is critical when starting out as there is so much to learn.
