Chemistry Fall 2010

Published

Is there already a thread for those of us taking Chemistry this fall? I know I could definitely use one!

My class starts the 31st.

Hi everyone!

I had chem last fall and used this website to help me practice extra problems/get a simpler explanation.

Thank you all for the support. All the advice has helped me. I'm basically having trouble converting numbers ( decimals ) in to scientific notation and deciding whether the exponent is negative or postive. for example: 0.000235 and having to convert it to 2.35 x 10^ -4. I don't even know if my example is right. I don't know.... My test is tonight... I pray that I pass.

I'm already a LPN and so far haven't had to use scientific notation for anything on my job, sometimes I think things are so irrevelent.

Oh btw. I'm not a big fan of Mastering Chemistry either, however it is our homework to complete the assignments so I do my best.

Your example is correct.

If the number you are converting to scientific notation is greater than one (such as 125.0), your exponent will be positive, and if the number is less than one (such as 0.0125), your exponent will be negative.

Once you think you have your answer in scientific notation, you can work backwards to check it. If your scientific notation number has a negative exponent, you move the decimal to the left. If the scientific notation number has a positive exponent, you move the decimal to the right. If you check your work and you do not get the decimal number you started with, then you will know you need to change the sign of your exponent.

Are you allowed to use a scientific calculator in your class? We are required to use them, and our instructor made sure we all knew how to convert the number on our calculator. However, it is still beneficial to be able to do the conversion without a calculator.

Had first exam yesterday and the waiting for the results of it is killing me. I feel as though I did great on the scientific notation part however I wish I would have studied more of other material. Oh well, Hopefully I will do better on the next exam.

Ok so I got a B on my first exam yaaay ! I'm so grateful. I got through sig figs and notations by doing a ton of practice problems. So one exam down 4 more to go.

Congrats to you!! Good job!!

Congrats on your exam! My first exam in a little over a week so I'm going to really start studying on Tuesday, just as soon as my first A&P exam is over. I think you did the right thing by just doing lot of practice problems so that's what I'm planning to do too.

I had a really good chem lab yesterday. It didn't include any math problems this time just experiments, observations, and deciding whether it was a chemical or a physical change. I think I was the only one who got them right on the first try. I listened to my own intuition and turned my paper in with the answers I thought were right and not the same ones the rest of my lab group were putting (because one girl insisted they were right). Mine were right so the rest of my lab group changed theirs to match mine, and for the first time this semester we weren't the last group to leave lab because we had to keep doing our's over. :D At least for the moment, I'm feeling a lot better about Chemistry!

I feel a little lost, but I must be doing something right. Someone told me that I'm the girl in class who "knows everything". :lol2: I'm glad it looks like that to others.

How is everyone doing in lab? We turn in reports from a lab manual and I just got my first lab back today with an okay grade, but no feedback or anything marked wrong on the actual report. I thought I did a very thorough job, but the professor said he rarely gives 20/20 or 19/20 on labs.

I'm not sure what I am missing here? How do you wow the professor with a fill in the blank lab report? Has anyone else encountered this in another lab class?

I'm doing okay on the homework but I only got a 70 on my first test. I'm a little disappointed that for the amount of hours spent on homework and studying, I didn't come up with a better grade.:crying2:

Best, L

We just turned in our first lab last week, so I'm not sure how it's going to be graded.

So far, we have had two quizzes, and we have a midterm next week. I think it should be okay, but then again, you never know!

I just got the results for my first chemistry exam. I got a 99%!

The highest grade in the class was a 103%.

Maybe, chemistry isn't so bad after all...

I think I have to thank khanacademy for teaching me how to figure out electron configurations of elements.
