We are looking at campaigning for a charge nurse differential and were wondering if anyone out there gets paid extra for being in charge and if so how much?
Thanks for your help
Celia
Two dollars an hour extra, lighter patient load.
44 bed acute medical floor in a community hospital, average census in the low 30s.
I think a bigger question is, what are the duties of a charge nurse? If our charge nurses took no patients, they'd sit around and twiddle their thumbs all day....there isn't THAT much for them to do.
I work nocs; our charge nurse makes shift assignments, places admits, and is in general a resource person. No huge amounts of responsibility, relative to some charge nurse positions. I mean, it is still a leadership position, and still an important position. But it's not as acute or difficult as some charge nurse positions, I think.
We get $2.50/hr extra for charge, and the same for precepting. The night shift charge nurse doesn't have an assignment, and days won't be taking one starting in a few weeks. Charge is rotated among experienced nurses on days and nights, usually while training another nurse how to do it.

We get 1.00 an hour/diff with a full patient load. I can remember way back when my manager asked me if I wanted to "train" for charge. I told him "No." A week later, I look at the schedule and suddenly I was in "charge." I had never been trained and had no clue as to what my duties were. What an absolute joke.
