CC's still have openings for Fall?

Published

Does anyone know when the placement for Fall semester will end? MCC was full on Monday and now there are 3 openings. I also noticed that SCC still had openings.....If they have a seat open I'll more than gladly fill it! :)

Sure wish they'd overbook the classes...at least by a couple. There's got to be some statistic out there showing the drop-out rate. I'd take a seat if they'd offer it!

Unfortunately, in the CNA class over the summer, there were only 20 seats. On the first day we had 18. One had dropped on Friday before and the other just didn't show for the first day of class. That's two seats that went unfilled for the remainder of the class. That kind of stuff infuriates me. :angryfire You know people are going to drop out or not show up for the first day of class. I would imagine that they can track this kind of statistic from previous classes and make an educated guess.

I have the statistics from Maricopa CC's Spring NS program. There were 394 seats available, 730 (!!!!) qualified applicants, and only 369 placed into the program!!! That means there were 25 seats that were left vacant!! I just wish that if there were openings the advisors would notify everyone with an app and see if they'd be okay going to that college or something. I'm sure a lot of people would jump at the chance to get in earlier, even if it's not at one of their choices.

I agree.....I just dont understand it. There is a shortage of Nurses and a huge qualified applicant pool waiting to get into Nursing programs. Why isn't there more effort being put into placing students? It would be nice if they posted the schools that had seats left over and then had interested applicants apply for them. It's killing me knowing that MCC could have slots open and I'm just sitting here waiting to get in........

At my school we went from 30 to 20! And we are still in block ONE! So many empty seats, it's a shame.

that's really sad to hear.......I wonder why there is such a high attrition rate? maybe they should look at changing the admission requirements.....

I am in block 4 at Glendale. Ya know, I have never seen students starting late in the second week. I don't think they fill those seats. I know it's hard to get in touch with the nursing advisors but you should give them a call at both programs to see if you could slip in! In block 3 we had so many empty seats it was riduculous - I had 12 people in my main class. In block 4 there is about 30, (most of them flunked blocked 4 previously:uhoh21: )

Wow! Any insight as to why the the drop out rate is so high? Is Block 4 really that difficult or are people not able to commit the program? I'm planning on being totally immersed in the program once I start.

I took your advice and called my admissions counselor. She saidthat they won't be adding anymore people to the Fall class :crying2: They will mail out preference sheets for Spring placement on 9/12 and the first placements will take place 10/4.....The waiting begins again..... :uhoh3:

So sorry that they won't let you in :scrying: That must be frustrating. I know the prereqs are a tough hurdle to get over and to top it off you have to wait now!

That was one of the reasons I took a round about way to get where I am. I went to Maricopa Skill Center for block 1 and block 2. The wait was about 9 months but you don't need your prereqs there. I was still doing BIO201 and microbiology when I went there for nursing assistant and I finished BIO202 during block 1. I don't have a job or kids so that was doable for me. Then I went immediately over to Glendale for block 3. It was a snap to get in after passing the NET test (I never even had heard of the test before so I didn't study and passed). I also had a high HESI score; you also need that to enter block 3. I think they required an 850 and I had an 1100.

Now on attrition rates. In my class of block 3 with 12 people, 2 of them failed the semester. Block 3 was a real killer at Glendale. Volumes of information and the tests were 3/4 questions that were not lectured on and you had to retain from text readings (and some weeks were like 500 pages of reading). Most of the class were barely passing the tests in the low 80s. Some were tottering around 75 (you probably know 76% is passing). Some students didn't do the reading and if you didn't do the reading it made passing the tests very difficult. The only way I got through it was to use the syllabus as an outline and type up study notes going by the syllabus. There are no study guides or hints to test questions!

On block 4 - it is HEAVY into physiology. One of the teachers said the two main reasons that students are flunking in block 4 is english as a second language and students not reading the book. Another instructor told me she kicked out 3 students in clinicals the semester before last because they couldn't start an IV correctly. I have that instructor right now for clinicals for peds at the county:uhoh3: I am kinda shaking in my boots now and am very careful in clinical!

Now some more scuttlebutt......block 4 at Glendale is supposed to be easier than block 4 at PC. Block 4 at PC is organized like block 3 at Glendale - very out of control with the test questions and you have no idea what to study for. I think in block 4 at Glendale we at least know what to concentrate our efforts on - and I think it is physiology. I will find out after the first test.

Now, was the challenge in Block 3 the lecture information or the TEACHING of the information????.........if you are catching my drift. Been hearing some "scuttlebutt" of my own!!;) :lol2:
