Does anyone know when the placement for Fall semester will end? MCC was full on Monday and now there are 3 openings. I also noticed that SCC still had openings.....If they have a seat open I'll more than gladly fill it! :)
can't say....I think they should make patho a prereq. I think it would be a good indicator of who can succeed in the program.....
why place people in coveted slots if they aren't able to succeed in the program?
that's just my .02.....
I'm going to take this back to the beginning...So how do they think that the new students coming in are going to be able to pass these kinds of classes without taking Pathophysiology as a separate co-requisite? Eliminating this kind of class would be suicide.
beats me.......judging by Lu Ann's posts, we better have a good handle on the basics before we enter Blocks 3 and 4. It will be interesting to see what the new requirements will be. I still think that Patho will be incorporated into the program in some way.......
Mary, you're right. They WANT us to KNOW this stuff, right? I mean, we are supposed to learn the material and be able to put it into practice. If you don't understand the stuff and barely pass the class, what good is that? Deanna
I was told it's going to be incoorporated into the program but they're not sure what they're going to do about FON, probably include it as well. Is patho really that hard that it would weed out students? I just started it last Thurs during my semester 'break'.
I really wish they would do something about the leftover seats in the NS classes. How could they possibly not fill every single one of them??
Hi Keli,
I don't think Patho is hard. Actually it is the most interesting class I've had so far. However, by mid-semester we lost about 30 out of 70 students in the class. There are also a lot of people who retake it which can indicate that they didn't pass the class the first time around.
The thing with Patho is that there is a lot of information being thrown at you and there is a lot of reading involved. For each class, I usually have 3 chapters to read. A lot of students feel that they don't have to do the readings, they just rely on the instructors notes. This is where they get into trouble and why many fail. You also need to have a good grasp on your A&P. If you only passed A&P with a C then there is a very good chance you won't pass Patho (this is what my instructor told the class.) You are a very dedicated and motivated student so please don't be afraid of the class. It is a class that requires effort onthe students part (this is definitely not a cram at the last minute class) but it is very interesting and I think you will enjoy it!

Thanks Mary, you eased my fears a little. I started last Thurs and my teacher seems great. We already have 10 chapters (!!) to read this week, but I guess it will prepare me for what is going to happen in NS. ALL of the students in my class are either waiting for NS or in it, so hopefully I'll get some good information. So far I think it's going to be fascinating, it'll be great taking what I've learned in all my other classes and putting it all together, YKWIM? My FON class doesn't start until Sept 6th, I'm taking it online, but that should be interesting as well. I'll be so glad to not have to take any co-req's while trying to get through NS, one good thing I guess you can say about this 'break'.
OCTOBER 4th countdown.....35 days and counting

Hi Keli,
I know what you mean......I think that is why I enjoy Patho so much, because it utilizes everything we learned in 201,202,& 205.....This is the last of my prereqs as well...The good thing about it is that once I start the program I'll only have classes 2-3 days per week....It makes the "mom thing" so much easier!
I didn't actually count out how many days it is to 10/4 but I do know I won't be sleeping the night before lol! I wonder if they'll post the placements at midnight or if we'll have to wait until normal business hours.....
ttyl,
Mary

Teaching of the information........it wasn't done. Block 3 is divided into med/surg and psych. I adored the psych teachers and enjoyed lecture BUT the tests were tough. There were many obscure questions that were never even touched upon in lecture. In fact most of the tests were full of obscure questions. I was thinking I am sorry I did not go to Rio Salado because I spent so much time doing self study that I felt my time was wasted in lecture.
And there was assessment class.........a one hour credit that should of been at least a 3 credit class. The class time was 3 hours a week with lots of case studies that were very time involving. The med/surg part of assessment class is a nightmare. If you have ever seen the Seinfeld show where Kramer plays a pt with gonorhea for a bunch of med students - that's what it's like. You have to assess somebody and make a medical dx, and then write up a case study described what you would do to fix him - tests to run, drugs to prescribe, throrough review of systems beyond what you would see a doctor detail in a chart in a new assessment of a pt presenting to the hospital. This class went WAY beyond scope of practice for an RN but I did learn a great deal. BTW, you have to buy the Merk Manual for this class (the doctor's bible).
And, the care plans for med/surg had to be down to a cellular level for explanations of the physiology of the diagnosis, for example what caused this to happen, why did it happen in the first place, description of inflammation process or chemical mediators involved, yada, yada. The care plans are a mini-novel.
OH, what a semester
