CCAC Prospective Nursing Students Fall 2015

Published

Hi everyone! I'm new here, i'm wanting to apply to CCAC nursing program in the spring for the fall 2015. Wondering if anyone else out there is in the same boat? Or can i get some advice? I'm wondering if we're allowed to turn in reccomendations etc. I'm concerned because when i first started college i didnt care about my grades so my GPA is very low right now but i have all of the pre-reqs and co-reqs out of the way except A+P 2 and micro. Hoping to take those in the Spring/Summer. Has anyone else ever gotten in with a low GPA? Also, I keep seeing things about different campuses and people saying their "Allegheny evening" or "North Day".. where do you find out those schedules?? Thanks everyone!!

Dosage Calc info is provided in the student manual. I know people that failed their first attempt, so i just wanted to put it out there for everyone. Better to be prepared. I'm not sure how well the cover the material before dropping you into the exam.

NURSING PROGRAM

Title: Drug Dosage Calculation Guideline

Responsibility of: Quality Assurance Council

Dates of Revision:

Dates of Review:

Next Date to be Reviewed: Fall 2017

It is the belief of the Nursing Faculty that accuracy in the calculation of drug dosages is critical in

providing for the optimal safety of clients in the healthcare setting. Therefore, the following criteria

have been established for each nursing course to insure that students have the cognitive abilities

necessary to correctly calculate drug dosages. Calculators may be used in calculating drug dosages.

ï‚· A drug dosage calculation exam will be administered for the following courses: NUR 110, NUR 130,

NUR 220, NUR 230, and NUR 240.

ï‚· For NUR 110, the first drug dosage calculation exam will be given along with the material

related to drug administration.

ï‚·

For NUR 130, NUR 220, NUR 230 and NUR 240, the first drug dosage calculation exam

will be administered no later than the first week of the semester.

2. The drug dosage calculation exam may be retaken only once.

ï‚· For NUN 101: successful retesting must be completed within two weeks of the first testing

attempt.

ï‚·

For NUR 130, NUR 220, NUR 230, and NUR 240: successful retesting must be completed

by the end of the 2nd week of the semester.

3. Students will not be permitted to administer medications on the clinical unit until successful

completion of the drug dosage calculation exam occurs.

4. Failure to successfully pass this exam after two attempts will result in failure of the nursing course for

which it is taken.

5. Minimal passing score on the drug dosage calculation exam for all courses: 92%

6. Inability to correctly administer medications in the clinical setting (inclusive of dosage calculation)

will automatically constitute an Unsafe Performance.

Dosage calcs are given during the semester. Once you're in you're in. Sorry for any confusion, but they take people by surprise at times. Knowing how to do them prior to taking the exam is very beneficial. It seems that all of the pre nursing students I've met think that once you're done with math 108 and in the program you never have to worry about the metric system or another math problem again. And so many times I've seen it bite them in the behind.

bstinel thats what she told me she said your not going to lose your spot if the fax didn't go through and we didn't receive it

I agree there should be confirmations in some way

You all have made me worry :(

I sent my letter in on monday and now I am worried it won't get there in time

Would anyone be able to tell me what number or email would be best to try to contact them D:

I called the number listed for the Dean of nursing on the website it they wouldn't tell me if they received mone, they said they are not looking at them til thursday

I think we should all be good. I can't imagine them giving our seat away because of the mail or fax not working. I imagine they would at least contact us via email. I agree though, there should be some type of confirmation. At the very least it would ease up the pressure on them and us.

Hi,all. I got into the day program at south, I previously was in the fall 2014 program at south night. I passed everything but the clinical so I had to restart the program all over again. Pertaining to the dosage calculations the math is self teaching they give you a book and send you on your way.you can go to the skills lab to practice equations also in 110 there was at least 2 problems on the test that were dosage calc. You need to memorize a conversion chart in order to do some problems also some problems are basic mathmatics. Hopefully th is helps you some.

Hey guys, congrats on getting in! I just graduated from CCAC, and have 3 pairs of scrubs for sale. I have 3 pairs of size small tops and bottoms, I will let them go for 10$ a piece, cheaper than Discount uniform wants. BTW, small is not "small" - I am 140 lb, 5'3" and the tops are pretty loose on me, the bottoms fit perfectly. Try the ones on at orientation if you want, but know that you don't have to buy them right then and there. Plenty of us are looking to pass ours on, and you can also go to American Discount Uniform stores (Lawrenceville and Monroeville) and get they style you want embroidered in plenty of time (though not for 10$/piece.) Mine are clean, in great condition, one set with extra side pockets. I would love to have them go to good use, and save someone some money. Feel free to PM me, or if you have not been a member long enough, reply with your # or email, and I will get back to you asap. PS- I am an active member for 2 years who posts and starts new threads often, just opened a new username to protect my anonymity. I am a South campus day student, finished my mentorship hours on Monday, Pinning on the 13th. Just so you know I am not trolling for info. (It read weird to me when I said to give a # or email... I promise I'm a real person :) )

And BTW, I didn't reply to my letter fast enough. Missed the deadline, don't remember why, since I was do darn excited! Amber Reed CALLED me and asked if I wanted the spot before they opened it up to the next round of letters - there are three rounds of acceptance letters - relax. Just stay in touch with them, they will not give your spot away. THEY NEED YOUR MONEY, all of the county schools are hurting right now. They practically begged us to take summer classes, even those of us who don't need any for a BSN, just to keep revenue up. Just keep the lines of communication open and you will be fine.

I seek wisdom from anyone currently or previously in the South evening/day program.

I would like to know if the second orientation in Aug is mandatory or skipable. I know it provides clinical info for students.

I plan on taking my family on vacation that week and of course the school is useless for providing factual information. any info from you fine folk will be greatly appreciated.

Also, do you start hospital clinicals your first week or last 5? acceptance letter said last five weeks. Someone else told me immediately. Somehow that doesnt add up. Why would you be dropped into a hospital setting week one and not have fundementals to back it up with?

Have someone record orientation.

Week 1. If you have Monday clinical, it will be your 1st day, before you have even been to class. It will be fine, no one expects you to start an IV or do CPR. Just show up early, meet your mates, get oriented to the hospital and maybe help a patient get cleaned up. Most groups sit in the cafeteria most of the day, watch HIPAA videos and leave early.
