CBD Administration in School? Policy?

Updated:   Published

Does anyone administer CBD at school? Do you have a policy? If so, what is it?

We have one student who takes CBD oil for seizures.. another one is on medical marijuana. Our policy prohibits the marijuana. No policy on CBD.

This is such a complex situation for so many of us. Marijuana based CBD is federally illegal. Hemp based we treat as an "essential oil" and since it is not FDA approved -we do not administer. I am not saying that these products do not have a place or do not work, but our nurses are choosing to not administer in our schools.

Medical marijuana is a gummy. It is prescribed by an MD, however, state law states it is illegal to have on school grounds, even with an order.

The CBD oil is ordered by a neurologist. It is what the student takes when she has a seizures over 3 minutes.

It is not evidence-based, no matter what the MD says. Or the neuro. How many docs write for absolutely worthless stuff because parents ask for it? We need more studies, and if it does work than the specific product (and not a gummy) needs to be legalized.

I am all for compassionate use (I grew up in the bad old days of AIDS in the 90s). It is not worth my license to give a medication that the TX BON tells me I shouldn't give (because it is not clinically-trialled and evidence-based).

I discovered CBD oil from a friend a couple years ago and it’s been a miracle. I’ve taken it every night/morning and it’s helped me with severe anxiety. I was taking Xanax for years before for panic disorder/generalized anxiety disorder and went through withdrawal hell getting off that ***. I don’t see anything wrong with it compared to the meds you can get prescribed from the doctor that can ruin your life and Xanax almost did mine. Now I’m almost through the last semester of my ADN ? CBD also helps with pain.

Realized I went off topic and can’t figure out how to edit the post lol.Just vouching for its benefits! There are more studies lately that have come out regarding its benefits recently.

But none of those studies are clinically controlled. Please understand that as a nurse, you cannot give a medication just because a doc says to. Please also understand that what you're taking is not standardized and may leave traces of THC in your urine when you take a drug test. Best of luck.

The State of Washington just passed a law about Marijuana to be given to students in schools - Nurses do not administer and do not delegate the administration and we do not store the Marijuana. The school does have to have a place that is private and we do have to document and monitor. No inhaled marijuana. Only the parent with the card that matches the students card can administer.

I love this guidance. It walks a line. I imagine that this is difficult for the parent. Does anyone know what the dosing on this is? Also...y'all, Marinol has been prescribed for decades (usually for nausea and cachexia associated with cancer pain and HIV wasting). I wonder if anyone's looked at that in relation to seizure management.

And that is anecdotal versus evidenced based, and we, as school nurses, are bound to our school board rules, state laws, and individual state nurse practice acts.

I just asked my District nurse supervisor about this last week because I feel it is something that is going to come up.

She stated - Not without a Dr. order AND if approved thru 504 or ARD

Our attorney told me not to give the CBD. So that makes my job easier!

Yes each School district must have a written policy.

Must have a doctor's order even with the parent administering this.

The school districts I work in have not made a policy though I have given the sample policy. No parents was requested this yet.

In our state, a doctor can't issue a "prescription" for medical marijuana legally. The medical marijuana card approvals are just "recommendations." As a result, our policy is we can not accept a request for administering medical marijuana and possession of that is as much a controlled substance violation as any other drug here.

Legal CBD (i.e., no THC to speak of) is covered by the non-prescription drug policy. If the student's doctor wants to sign off on it, we will accept it. We try to discourage drug administration at school when it can be done at home just as well.
