Hey guys...looking for some help.

I was hired as a new graduate on a medicine unit, PRN. I did my consolidation there so I'm pretty comfortable so far. But, lately I feel like management is pressuring me to work more. My facility also has no minimum hours for a PRN employee but Im there 1-3 times a week. I almost never accept shifts when they call me. I personally like working PRN it gives me lots of flexibility.

How should I handle this?

I'm surprised that you got a PRN position as a new grad. This may also be why you are feeling pressure to work more, because they are desperate for help and whatever they can get they will take, but I could be wrong.

Don't ever feel guilty for not giving more availability. If you wanted to work full time then you would have applied for that kind of position. Work when you want to work. If saying no is hard right now (you will get better at it if you haven't already) use your caller ID and let it go to voicemail. If you are inter in working, return the call. If not, then don't. You aren't required to be attached to your phone on your day off.

In my experience, many employers have a rule for prn staff that if you turn down shifts some defined number of times within a specified time period, or turn shifts X number of times in a row, you get dropped from the prn pool. I haven't known of any nursing employer that would just keep you on the prn list indefinitely, even if you're not available to work when they need you to (not just when you choose to).

What are they doing to pressure you? There's a big difference between "leaving me messages" and "telling me I have to work more or be dropped from the pool".......

If you're already working your required shifts and don't wish to work more, just ignore the calls. They probably call their full time staff all the time, too. One of my past employers kept calling me for months after I'd resigned and moved out of the state.

I had one like that once. I worked every weekend, got tired of being abused and resigned. I already had another job set up and was set to go back to school so that I would never have to work in that kind of environment again. For YEARS, the crazy nut that was the FINAL STRAW that got me to run like hell from that place kept calling and texting me, asking if I would ever consider coming back to work for them! No,no,no,no,no,no, and no.
