Care plans- student nursing

Yes, those CAREPLANS are a real PAIN! But they do have their benefits. They teach us the proper form or nursing.

But honestly speaking mKue, I am glad I don't have to deal with them any longer.

I had a severe anaphylactoid reaction to of all things, Niacin; a water-soluble vitamin, and it left me disabled. I had a CVA.

The point of careplans is to learn not just to turn them it. YES, they are a pain and YES they are time consuming and I don't miss them at all. However, there is a reason for care plans. The cut and paste thing may save time when doing them, but why do a care plan if you haven't learned anything. I just graduated and do apply what I learned from careplans into every day practice. We were never allow to turn our careplans in typed. The all had to be done by hand so we learn from what we were writing.

As much of a hassle as they are, there is light at the end of the tunnel. A few years from now, you'll say to yourself "OMG, I hope I never have to do that again", but I guarantee you will have gotten something out of it.

I learn just as much from typing as I do writing... plus it looks more professional. I don't cut and paste other people's work... I do it myself. Frankly I find predone careplan books a waste of time ... not enough depth in any that I've read so far for my program.

Plus.... who can read my handwriting when I'm writing 20+ pages in one night????

I only have one thing to say.....my instuctor already OWNS every single book ever written about care plans and she knows every website in the universe that mentions the word, "careplan" and if she thinks for even a second that she has "seen this somewhere before" she is like a dog with a bone and she will hunt until she finds it...then she will bust you for plagerism!

Last year she flunked 2 students for this very reason! I don't know how she does it, but I think she is psychotic, I mean psychic!

She just knows!

I spend many hours on my careplans and when I graduate I am going to shred them all and sprinkle them on her lawn.

Who needs toilet paper???

Oh, and Heather333, I totally agree with what you said...As much as I hate careplans, it is beneficial to do them and include as much as you can about the treatments, Dx, etc.....it is a good learning tool.

I love your idea about shredding your care plans and spreading them on your instructor's lawn after you graduate Gator.

The general public has no idea what we have to endure when we choose to become a nurse.

Wow! It's interesting how every school and program is different! In my LPN school, we have to do one care plan every week. We are taught to just basically get your info out of the book. I have a care plan CD that is so easy to use. No more flipping through pages, just click and you're there. Mine is by F A Davis. Great CD! I can do one in about an hour, depending on the extent of the illness, but I did do one that had 14 diagnoses and was about 30 pages long. Took about 3 hours. One of my instructors would have loved it, but as it was, we were assigned to a different teacher who doesn't like all the fluff. She thought it was funny and was very impressed, but asked me not to do that to her again. :) Which is fine with me. Any time I can do short and sweet is just fine!

Hi Jill,

Wow! Did you ever choose a great school! I had two instructors. One was an army nurse, and she treated us like we were in boot camp.

I was so glad when graduation day arrived, I cheered!

The other instructor was very precise, and she would drill us with questions on meds; what they were used for, what their possible side effects were, and how they help the person. She also taught us how we could recognize meds by their usage, their names, or the company that manufactures them. That has helped me a lot, because although I'm now disabled, I still love nursing, and I subscribe to three different nursing journals; one being "Nursing."

It has a five question quiz on combination meds that I love to challenge myself with, and I usually get them all correct. It's a lot of fun!

AAGGHHH! I feel so sorry for you! THAT is why I asked about plagiarism re: careplans!!! And why I was relieved when they said they did not consider that to be plagiarism! Knowing how much you can cut and past IS an important thing to know before doing them...
