Capella University vs. Walden

Updated:   Published

Hello all! I'm a BSN prepared nurse looking to get out of the hectic floor nursing and would rather teach at a college and take my summers off. Anyway, I was looking at Capella's program and Walden's program. I noticed that Capella is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA). No accreditation in nursing. I was wondering if this was more important for the BSN level. Walden has the CCNE in addition to the other accreditation as Capella.

Any help is greatly appreciated! I wanted to start class in Jan. I was hoping to move more south in the winters and back up to the midwest over the summers.

Thanks in advance!

Congrats on your decision to pursue an advance degree. I will be graduating from Walden in 8 weeks! It has been an amazing journey. I found the classes rewarding, and manageable. I teach ful time in a vocational nursing program, so I am pretty busy with work, school and family. If I had to do it over again I would choose Walden. I will probably not go on for my DNP as I am already 50 and do not think it really would benefit me in the long run....

good luck and the time will fly by!

I'm at Walden now how is the practicum going, please give me some details.

I'm taking research right now and ethics at the end of the month. I'm doing a concentration in education? Are you in the program?

Yes, I am in the program. I just started Jan 3. I just finished the orientation class. I have three more weeks of NUR 6100..Nurse leader course. I am also doing education as my concentration.

Specializes in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing.

I graduated from Walden in 2007, MSN education. I remain full time in the hospital (pay for a nurse educator is not good in comparison) and am a clinical instructor at a few colleges. One piece of advice....keep a copy of ALL of your work for your portfolio (if they still have that). It is very difficult to find copies at the end of the program, and if still a requirement you must submit your portfolio for review before graduation.

Yes, I believe it is still a requirement. Thanks, for the heads up.

I did the nursing education spec track. I finish next week. I can hardly believe it! The time went by fast. I was really considering a DNP program, but I really think I am stopping with my MSN. I will be 51 soon, and don't really think it will be cost effective for me to pursue a doctorate. Besides, I really like teaching in the community college. I currently teach in a vocational nursing program. I am considering either staying at the VN level, or transferring to the ADN program. Not dure yet. It is nice to have some options though.

GOod luck on pursuing your education!
