Capella University vs. Walden

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Updated:   Published

Hello all! I'm a BSN prepared nurse looking to get out of the hectic floor nursing and would rather teach at a college and take my summers off. Anyway, I was looking at Capella's program and Walden's program. I noticed that Capella is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA). No accreditation in nursing. I was wondering if this was more important for the BSN level. Walden has the CCNE in addition to the other accreditation as Capella.

Any help is greatly appreciated! I wanted to start class in Jan. I was hoping to move more south in the winters and back up to the midwest over the summers.

Thanks in advance!

I am interested in the MSN Informatics at Walden and am very interested in any and all thoughts about it. I really want to be careful before I start this expensive path. Any ideas how well this program is recognized?

I'm interested in Walden University DNP program. Is anyone out there currently enrolled in Walden's DNP program? I am getting mixed messages from several nurses. Walden's DNP program is new, and of course it has not been accredited yet. My question is this , is it necessary for the DNP program to be accredited upon admission or upon completion. I'm planning on starting in Sept 2011.

Specializes in LTC, med/surg, oncology, cardiac.

All I know is if you want to get your DNP you want your MSN in either informatics or leadership/management. If you have the education specialty they make you take several more classes. I am in the education track as I want to teach online. I've since accepted a teaching position in FL and will be taking 4 months off of school. I believe I have 7 classes left to finish the MSN. The school I will be teaching at I get my tuition paid for 100% after one year, so I would pursue my Phd over my DNP as it is better if you want to teach. DNP is more clinical settings etc.

Capella and Walden are for-profit, online programs that do not offer the quality of nursing education that one would receive at a university associated with a medical center. The best advanced degrees in nursing come from programs such as the University of Washington and the University of California in San Francisco. Admission standards and continuance standards are far superior at these schools and they are not driven by the profit motive. If one goes to Walden, Capella, or the University of Phoenix for nursing education, don't expect kudos from nursing educators and practitioners who know and understand what quality nursing education is.

Well, I must respectfully disagree. Obviously you have never been to any of these schools. I did my MSN with a specialization in Nursing Education with Walden. It was rigorous and challenging. I see nothing wrong with these programs for people who already have a minimun of an associates degree.

I was hired to teach in a ADN program after I obtained my MSN. I love it, and would go through Walden again. There are a bunch of naysayers like yourself, but those people are few and far between. I say to you-if it works for some-why not? It may not have been your cup of tea-but I would high recommend Walden to ANYONE. Now, of course, if you are going to be a nurse practitioner, you need to go someplace that will have clincals. That I agree with.

So please, do not put down something because YOU don't like it. There are quite a few of us grads from the schools you put down.

I have to agree with you. I also obtained my degree from Walden in Nursing education. I am currently working at a BSN program. We are also in the process of developing a new curriculum. Everyone who finds out that my degree is from Walden, state that they respect the nurses from that program because they have a very rigorous curriculum. I am currently attending University of Phoenix for my PhD in nursing education.

Hi I am planning to apply for MSN education program. I see a lot of negative remarks online Abt University and faculty. Can somebody tell me how is the program, anybody who is currently attending program. Please.

Also tell me how are the assignments, paper and quiz. are facultes helpfull.

Please help me before I get in.

Thanks

I graduated from Walden MSN-Nursing Education 2007. Since then I have secured teaching positions in both ADN and BSN (2) colleges and universites, and online education. I have developed and presented a 6 ceu seminar, presented at a conference, co-authored a Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing review book (Schaum's Outline of Psychiatric Nursing), and am currently preparing an Itunes app for CNA review. Prepared by Walden to face these challenges- you BET!!! I would certainly recommend Walden to anyone. Don't knock it till you tried it.

I agree with you! Walden was excellent for MSN-Nursing Education.

I am currently attending Walden University specializing in Education. I would not turn back for nothing in the world. The program is tough and the professors care. The degree is accepted by different organizations. At first I did hesitate to attend Walden but now I am glad to attend such a school with a great mission and standard of education.

Hey everyone looking for an rn-bsn, msn, phd in nursing........

Capella University has the only program for nursing professionals in education to earn a degree in nursing education and the research component is education and nursing, but not in clinical care, which as an educator, is important to me.

Nursing education is a specialized field within nursing. Understanding and learning in a supportive and open environment, paced just right and enjoyable in communication with others, including during colloquium (residency of only 3 1/2 days that usually doesn't interrupt work schedules. There is support from all over Capella and there is no badgering from the folks in admission. It also ended up cheaper...it sounds like a lot of money, but it is actually cheaper that my local university in-state tuition too! Walden has hidden costs and none of it made sense to me; and you only know it by asking for the breakdown. They were put off whereas Capella explained every penny and where it would be going to.

Having through about walden and Capella, I chose Capella because they didn't have admissions doing a hard sell. They also are accredited, they listen to their learners and have an excellent response times.

I'm in the phd program at Capella, and know several in the rn-bsn program and the msn program as well as the dnp program, and have made many friends who will be long lasting. Certainly, being in the phd program, there is a dissertation involved, and I have had nothing but wonderful support and help along the way. I'm nearly finished, and instead of the 5-years predicted, I'm in the beginning of my 3rd year....unprecedented! Not everyone earns an "a" either. My 4.0 is as rare as a diamond found in your own backyard.

I can't speak for any other profession than nursing, but if you are seeking a caring faculty with exceptional support systems, including the librarians, financial aid department, and even the president's office, capella university would and should be your choice. I don't regret my choice, but when I'm finished I'll miss it! But there are always way in which we can be a part of Capella, from being an adjunct or full-time faculty member to being involved in the alumni programs; and their support is forever, it doesn't end at graduation.

If you want to know more, feel free to shoot me an e-mail at "xuseme9 at yahoo dot com" I would love to tell you more, and answer your questions! Capella is my forever school and I will be active in the alumni programs, and i'm thankful to everyone who has made a difference in my life and in my education!

Make a good decision...............choose Capella University ...................

Sincerely, wendy unison
