Can't be happy with my grades

Published

I think I need a dope slap. I am passing all my classes with at least a B but I'm disappointed in myself for a few of my grades. I know I shouldn't expect to have straight As in nursing school, but that doesn't mean I have to be happy just because I'm "passing", right? Yes, C = RN, but I'm not used to Cs and they make my tummy hurt. :lol2:

Suck it up and be happy I'm doing fine so far or go ahead and have beef with myself and my grades because I made some stupid mistakes on a couple of tests?

hmmmm how was I snarky, eating anyone, or picking on someone? I wasn't even addressing the OP. If you read what they said, they haven't made a C. It's a true statement, C=you earned a C, that's that....not picking on anyone or saying anything about anybody in particular lol. Not to get side tracked, but it's a really good thing that the OP is striving for the best possible.

If you look on the class roster and person A has a C, person B failed, and Person C made an A. There's no little sidenote saying "this person is caring, this person really doesn't know what they're doing, and this person is just really smart". You earn what you earn, nothing rude or mean or discounting about it. And what attitude?

I don't need to lighten up, that's my opinion. I think it's rude to assume that people who make C's are barely competent, which is most certainly implying they just aren't as smart or as capable as people who get straight A's.

BTW, I have a 3.8 GPA. No C's. So this isn't personal for me.

I didn't say you were snarky or "eating anyone (I hate that phrase.)

I also wasn't talking about those people who aim for C's. That's unrelated to this post as the OP doesn't appear to only be aiming for C's. The OP is looking for support that it's okay if they can't get straight A's.

If we were talking about those who only strive for C's, I would have a completely different view, because I think that is wrong. I can't stand people like that.

I don't need to lighten up, that's my opinion. I think it's rude to assume that people who make C's are barely competent. You don't have to take my opinion personally, that's your choice. But it sure seems you feel some sort of need to keep defending yourself.

uh...that would be me and I stand by it. ;)

Oh, okay. Thanks. lol. Totally didn't read your post yet.

Yes you can pass with C's, but I'm talking about that whole mindset that people have where they just aim for the bare minimum.

So I understand why you said what you said in the beginning so thanks for clearing it up. This, like you, I can't stand. Those kind of people are lazy and they don't care enough to even try to do better. But that's not related to the OP, which is why nothing I had stated was in regards to this issue.

OP - just don't become one of these. If you try your best, then good for you. But don't just settle for a C. Try for an A. If you get a C, then okay, you tried. That's what matters.

There's nothing to defend myself against. And nothing I said was related to the OP because they haven't even made a C. Squirly implied that's who and what I was talking about. And based on what you said, if you can't stand me, well oh well lol. However, you might have said you can't stand lazy people, it can be read either way. But say an employer will see 2 applicants. And on paper, one has B's and C's, and the other A's and B's...a C is not better than an A, so who would they call for an interview? Employers are starting to look at grades in cities where there is a saturation of new grads. The C student can put on their resume how caring and passionate they are, but the A student will put that too...bottom line is when you are being competitive for stuff(grad school, jobs, etc), you can't defend yourself against your transcript. So it's important to aim for the top and be the most competitive you can. And I am in no way saying this is the situation for EVERYONE.

And based on what you said, if you can't stand me, well oh well lol. However, you might have said you can't stand lazy people, it can be read either way.

No, I never said I can't stand you. Sorry if that wasn't clear. I said I can't stand those people who just strive for the C and nothing better. Those types of people who just do the bare minimum to get by and never even try to do any better. Those are the types of people I don't like.

2 things...C does NOT equal RN at all. A C=a C amount or bare minimum amount of competency. Especially considering you go straight from C to F..no C- or D+ anymore, just F. Second, why would you not expect to make straight A's? People have done it, and will do it again lol.

I don't think grades are a good reflection of competency. Some people have test anxiety, some people have outside stressors that affect their performance, some people are not native English speakers etc. etc...and all of these things can make a huge difference in how well they do! A person who gets a C might know and understand the material just as well as a person who gets an A, but they can't show it on a piece of paper. So what? Hence C=RN.

Also, some people don't get A's no matter how hard they try. I know that's the case for me! The highest grade I've ever gotten in a class in my entire life is an A-, and the only reason that even happened is because I was in 10th grade and the class was being taught at about a 7th or 8th grade level.

I'm working my butt off in nursing school, and I have straight B's! I've only gotten an A on 2 tests this entire semester, and we've had 6 nursing tests, 2 psych tests and 2 pharmacology tests.

I'm pretty sure I knew they were talking about nursing school, and on paper when you have a grading scale of A, B, C, F..a C is bare minimum is it not? Yes you can pass with C's, but I'm talking about that whole mindset that people have where they just aim for the bare minimum. So like I said, a C does NOT equal RN, a C means you passed with a C. I'm an RN and I didn't make any C's, so don't associate my title, job, degree or whatever with a C. Sure some people have anxiety, but on paper...all they see is the grade, not anxiety. How is that rude? Yeah lighten up haha, and no I did not say everyone. Sure some people make A's and are scary to see in a hospital, and some make C's and would be great in the hospital.

Well I'm a NURSE too and I say that C- is NOT THE BARE MINIMUM ! AS a NURSE you should realize or have the mental capacity to know that some people are poor test takers and though they know the knowledge they still have problems with choosing the right answer on exams. Whenever I go on an interview as a nurse I have not been asked my GPA for nursing school. Nor when I passed the nclex I did not get a letter grade. Nor have any of my patients requested to know my grades. Yes I had a B average through school but even if I didn't I would still be damned proud of myself. Nursing school is not easy and everyone should set their standards to receiving an A. However, it doesn't happen all the time.

To the OP: Good luck in school and just continue to do your best and you will do fine. Try to re-evaluate your study habits and hopefully you will meet your goal .

You SHOULD as a NURSE have the mental capacity to read what is above and below the part you highlighted in my response. I mentioned a mindset of those who AIM for the bare minimum. Do you want to have them define what you're associate with? And I did mention ppl with anxiety, etc. Maybe the nclex should give out a score like the MCAT or other exams in the world. Look at the people who can drive, some have a license and passed with the bare minimum...and good god they're some scary drivers. Suuure sure some had anxiety during their test, some may not be native English speakers, but some of them just plain aren't good drivers. I did not once say the word everyone in my posts, so why are ppl acting like I'm talking about every single person?? Mental capacity would tell you to read the rest...not just the part that upsets the ones it pertains to. With the way everyone is talking, why do they even have tests or grades in nursing school if tests really don't reflect what you know??? You took statistics right? Outliers ring a bell? I did mention the ones who have anxiety, or some other factor that makes them an outlier...but GENERALLY(MEANING NOT IN ALL CASES, BUT A LOT OF TIMES), your grade reflects what you know. Oh and FYI, take a look over in the other forum where people constantly post about interviews...grades are being considered more.

Did you not read the part where I said people have anxiety? If you did make straight A's in school and graduated with honors...would you want someone to associate your job or title, license, etc with = C ? It's a generalization. Everyone on here would freak out if you generalize anything about them, except for that for some reason. I didn't generalize what I said..so don't read it like I did. Suppose you have someone with anxiety who graduates with a C, but on tests they freak out and dunno what to do? Some of them may be good nurses, but what about the ones who break down and have no clue what to do in a code? What about the people who pass with a C because they really just can't grasp a concept. They graduated, some may be good nurses, but some of them may just guess they're way through the shift. Did I just say EVERYONE is like that? Nope.
