Hi, I am currently in school to get my LPN certificate. I am a Canadain citizen through my birth and am now able to get Australian citizenship through my aussie mom. I would love to go a work as an LPN (or Enrolled Nurse) in Australia. Not sure on what steps to take and what is required of me. Some feedback would greatly be appriciatied

THANKS :) Christina

Contact the Nursing Board in whatever state you intend to work for information about registration. I understand that you usually need RN qualifications to come to OZ to work, but if you have Aussie citizenship you shouldn't have any problems. Depends what area of nursing you work in as to how easy/difficult it will be to get regular work. Good luck!

Thanks for the infomation...I hope everything goes OK.

You will not be able to get work, until you actually get Autralian citizenship, being able to get it and having it are two completely different things in the eyes of immigration.

Until you actually have that finalized document in hand, and that can take a couple of years to get; you will be unable to get a visa that will permit you to work as a nurse there. Or until you have RN after your name.

Same thing if it were in reverse and you were Aussie and wanting to work in Canada; without actual citizenship papers in front of you, it can't be done.

Thanks Suzanne - as always your insight into immigration is invaluable!!

Hi, I have met a couple of nurses from overseas who were being sponsered by the respective nursing agency. They are contracted to work for the agency for a set period of time. That could be an option for you depending on whether you want to be an agency nurse or not. It might be worth some research once you get some experience.........good luck :)

If she is eligible for australian citizenship it doesn't take more than few months to get it. I got my citizenship in 2 months because I was admited to Uni and as a permanent resident I wasn't eligible for HECS but I was eligible for australian citizenship. I explained the situation and got the citizenship in time to apply for HECS ;) .

Without australian citizenship you can still come to work here with a working visa, or a long stay bussiness visa but you need an employer to sponsor you.

Willma,

informations about australian citizenship http://www.citizenship.gov.au/ in the FAQ section you can find the form you need to submit to get the citizenship, acording to them it takes few weeks to get the citizenship if one of your parents is australian. Here http://www.immi.gov.au/ you can find informations about traveling, working and studying in Australia. Good luck!

She is not a resident down there in Oz either. To qualify for the nursing visas, they are not available for LPNs or the equivalent. She needs to apply for citizenship there, it is not automatically done. That usually takes some time. A completely different process needs to be completed first for that, before even considering obtaining a license down there, as without the Oz citizenship, there is no way to get a visa to work there as an LPN.

That is what needs to be done first, before even attmepting any nursing licenses or things will get backed up because of immigration issues.

If LPNs are enrolled nurses she can come with a long business visa (4 years) if she has a sponsor employer. She can't migrate here as an enrolled nurse, only as an RN, but she can get a job and stay here as long as she has a sponsor. For Long Stay Business Visa (sublass 457) there is a list of ocupations that are eligible for this type of visa, one of them is 3411-11 Enrolled nurse. This is a temporary visa not a permanent one, but allowes enrolled nurses from overses to come and work in Australia.

Who wants to move to a country, where they may not be able to stay? Buy a car, and even an apt, and have to leave?

And there have to be jobs for them, and that the facility tried to get a native but could not. Normally they do not need to even pay the same salary.

Not a wise move. If you cannot stay there after, if you wish.
