Grant Macewan JAN 2013

World Canada CA Programs

I'm just wondering if anyone has applied I'm in the middle of sending my final transcript (finally finished Math 30 pure) and I'm applying as post secondary. I really wanted to get into the fall but it was full by the time I applied January feels kind of awkward to start school. Anyways.

Post here if you've applied and with what GPA. Maybe we can help each other out with the waiting :)

I went to the apply Alberta website and my transcript status says completed. You should call the office of registrar and ask them.

I think we're gonna be receiving something in the mail this coming week, really nervous!!!

-keep me posted :D

Hi! I'm new to allnurses. I also applied for the winter term and received conditional acceptance. Best of luck to you guys!

Hi tiggerRN when did you recieve acceptance? Was it a package or did it show something on your Macewan student center? I guess if you got conditional acceptance this early you must have been really high like an 85%+ average?

I really think we should see some big changes on our files this week for those of us who havent heard anything.

So I called Macewan today and they updated my portal to this:

We have evaluated your application and currently you meet the requirements of the program; however there are not spaces available at this time. As soon as spaces are available you will be notified by the Office of the Registrar.

Basically she said that I met the competetive average but they werent sure how many spots are left and that if I didnt get a change in status before Oct 1st that I should reapply for next septemeber?? What the heck I met conditional acceptance months ago but they didnt bother to update my portal until today - the day I decided to call them.

I'm going to hold out untill Oct 1st but if my status doesnt change before then I'm going to talk directly to whoever is in charge of applications because it's unacceptable.

What do you think they'll do when you call them? My guess is that you'll be told there are limited numbers of seats in the program, that although you met the admissions criteria so did a large number of other applicants and the seats were filled in the order the successful applications were received. There's really not much else they can do. The website states this quite clearly:

"Limited space is available and not all applicants who are eligible may be admitted. As a competitive program, academic performance is the primary criterion for admission. The date of application is the secondary criteria for those who meet the competitive requirements. It is to your advantage to apply and complete program admission requirements as early as possible since most programs can accommodate only a limited number of students."

You obviously have little experience with bureaucracy. Nothing moves quickly. The volume of paperwork involved in these programs is overwhelmingly huge. The admissions process for this intake began back in February. You say you submitted the last of your paperwork "a month and a half ago" which from the 12th of September would be about about the end of July, a full 6 months after the intake process opened for business. You know how many individual pieces of paper your application included. Multiply that by several hundred and then imagine trying to wade through it all. The first ones in will be the first ones out. Pretty self-explanatory.

It's called the luck of the draw. It's not unusual to have over 1200 applicants for 120 seats.

My son's friend gave up after two years of not making the final cut. Decided to go to Norquest for a PN education rather than reapply every year to GMU and UofA hoping to meet ever changing requirements and changing number of applicants.

Life isn't fair.

Hi Janfrn, the peice you quoted goes agaisnt everything they are telling me. It says that academic performance is primary criteria and application date is secondary. The competetive average is 80% and I was told today I have a 94.3% which is well above the average. I find it hard to believe that everyone applying had a higher average than me. In all honesty I think they are behind in evaluating applications and are putting everyone on a waitlist until they can get everything sorted out. Just a hunch.

So if one person has an 82 and another has an 87% you're telling me the person with the 80% would get in over the other because they applied a little earlier? That's insane..

Interesting that you know that about someone specifically - as you've implied. GMU couldn't have given it to you since that information is FOIPP-protected. It's too bad that you're still in limbo, but...

You still havent explained the huge contradiction with what they say in their pamphlets and what they tell you when you go in to ask about your application. Application date should be secondary critera but apprently that's not the case judging from you and the lady i spoke with today.

If you believe the leaflets, a mature student (over 21 yo) only needs a 65% for admission to the programme. Yes, in theory but they still go by highest marks and date of application.

You can't fight with them because ultimately they have the final decision.

I realize that 65% for a mature student is probably a marketing ploy to get you to blow $70 only to find out 8 months later you actually need 80% but I'm not in that boat. It's just frustrating after spending countless hours on getting the grades needed and paying money to take extra courses you're denied on a trivial thing like application date. I was warned about the appalling admissions department at Macewan sort of makes me regret declining UofA which did give me an acceptance but the reputation at the GMU lured me in.

My application fee was $100. If you only paid $70 you got a deal!
