Can you lose a job if your license by endorsement is taking forever?

Hi I am a nurse in California and am trying to get endorsed to IL. I originally applied on 3/17 and still have not received my license or temporary license. I am waiting for the board of California to send over my paperwork to IL and for my fingerprints to be approved (they were originally "lost" so I sent a new receipt with the number on it but they haven't left the mailroom yet". I accepted a job in March at a hospital in IL with a start date of 5/22. I have informed HR of this delay in my license and they stated that I can start 6/5 instead. They also said that they need the permanent license to start. I am wondering if it is possible to lose a job if I need this start date to be extended longer because of licensing issues. I'm also wondering if a temporary license is eligible only at certain facilities or at all.

Is it possible? Well, yes, because a valid license in the state where you will be working is a job requirement. What's going to matter is how much the facility is going to be willing to work with you on a start date if your license isn't set by 6/5.

Illinois does not allow you to work with a temporary or pending license.

Short answer: yes.

Long answer: yes, but it depends on HR and the hospital policies as to how long they're willing to hold the position for you.

A tip, and one that worked for me in New Jersey, is to call every day. I didn't get my NJ license until I went to the BON after I packed up and moved across the country. Actually, it took two visits, one to get the "yay, you've been licensed!" letter and one to get my actual license. It ultimately took me close to 6 months to get my license, most of that in a different state.
