Can we lay to rest the "compassion" nonsense?

Published

Anyone else reallllllllllly tired of people on this board stooping to "You lack compassion, shame on you, you're a nurse" charge?

First off, it is a nothing more than an ad hominem attack in disguise, lets not fool ourselves about that

Second, to make broad assumptions about one's nursing practice based on interactions here is utter rubbish

No one on here is my patient

Nor are you co-workers

You are , people on a public message board

Additionally, Being assertive, calling out logical fallacies, asking for evidence, or pointing out the sometimes difficult truth is not indicative of one's compassion level

Please. Stop. Doing. This

The compassion gambit is petty, old, and beneath everyone

What about the hand holding/ plain speak delivery? I'm working on that.

I did that this week...I had to basically hold someone's hand and tell them the fall-out of having an STI and the options of their life, but wasn't shy on how it would affect them, the person that may have given it to them, and that it will be a challenge; however their career goals and living life to the fullest is paramount.

The honesty worked for the teen.

I hope it works for the next teen.

Ugh, I always hated that. The doc would tell the patient the Dx, then hand them off to me for question and answer time.

Nothing like telling a 16 year old the details of HPV and Herpes, and no, he really doesn't love you after all.

Also rough telling a 60 year old , whose husband "has never been unfaithful" the same freaking thing.

The VA.

The good news is if you've seen one VA you've seen one VA. I just have the unfortunate experience of being at a bad VA for being a provider. It's ok though because I have plenty of job opportunities elsewhere. I am just waiting for the perfect job to jump ship.

I believe that the USA citizenry is becoming more narcisistic and less compassionate over time.

We see very public examples of this in our political and religious media. Even our prayers have become narcissistic and focused upon wealth over people (consider the "name it and claim it" church phenomenon, prosperity preaching, etc).

As we struggle with tremendous income inequality and concentration of wealth and power in the hands of but a few, millions of Americans fall into the trap of emulating that behavior often demonstrated by those "at the top". Unfortunately, some of the worst civil behaviors are concentrated in that small group.

In part, Donald Trump has cashed in on this phenomenon. He verbalizes the angry and xenophobic things that have been bubbling under the surface for so many during the OBama presidency. Those people then believe that Trump will work for THEM (since he speaks like them), even though nothing in his life would suggest philanthropy, altruism, or generosity are anywhere near priority in his life choices.
