Can I get fired from signing the MARS a night before my next shift

hello everybody well I'm a new LVN in California I have around 10 months of experience, and I felt that I have done the worst mistake ever in my life, here is the story hopefully I can get feedback as I'm freaking out thinking I may get fired. Two weeks ago I worked the 1500 to 2330 shift at my job, I was schedule to come in the next day to work the 0700 to 1530 shift at the same medication cart I had the night before, I was so tired that I decided what the heck I'll just sign the MARS Tonight and just document any med refusals or anything else if they happen tomorrow, big big mistake of course, my employee cough that and I ended up being suspended for 4 days, being accused of falsification of documents :banghead: and since I'm only on call I'm not getting any days for next month (April) I have a meeting with the DON on April 4th and I'm sooo afraid that I might get fired , this is the first time I have done this so I'm not sure what is going to happen, please any advice is welcome so help me ease my pain and worry. thanks

I don't have any advice for you...unfortunately you made your bed and must lie in it.

You *did* falsify the documents.

You can't predict the future, so why document it? What if one of the patients had passed away during the night shift?

It's a hard lesson to learn, for sure, but you're going to have to deal with the consequences.

That is falsification. If a survey had been done and it was discovered the facility would get dinged pretty badly.

Take responsibility for what you did then tell them you realized your error and you will not do it again. Maybe come up with an idea or two for a way to save time. That's potentially a med error for each drug for each patient.

Good luck!

I agree .. Take this as a lesson learned and move on.. This too shall pass.. I know what you mean by working back to back shifts., and I'm sure you meant no harm, but always remember take no short cuts, it's not worth losing your license.. You have worked so hard to get to this point ..I hope and pray you don't get fired , but if you do, thank them for the opportunity , and admit your mistake and keep moving forward .

No one can project what may or may not happen. In your practice moving forward, never, ever document anything early. Any number of things can happen and you can not assume the future on legal documents such as a MAR.

Be prepared to discuss with your manager your mistake, what you know you did incorrectly, and how that will change for the future. Lesson learned.

thank you for all the advice and the reply, of course I have learned my lesson, like I said I'm new so I learn new things every day, this sure won't be happen again, and I have admitted my mistake already, I have talked to the DON this past Friday, and she has remove me from passing meds for the rest of the month but has allow me to do treatment so hopefully I won't get fired, but at this point i seriously think I deserve to be fired since I know the consequences of the mistake I had made.

Thank you for the reply I have taken responsibility for it, I'm seriously really scared of loosing my license over this mistake, I shouldn't have never done that, but I was really tired from working pm and morning shift.

Yes, even though you were 'tired' you put your license and job at risk for falsification of medical documentation. If you have personal malpractice/liability insurance (and everyone should) you need to call your carrier in the morning for advice and possible representation.

Are you in a union? If so, seek their assistance.

Sorry , stupid fingers, anyway, if your DON wanted to fire you, she would at that moment.. It sounds as if your DON, is willing to give you a second chance and move forward... You know what you did, you made your self accountable, and now put this behind you...

You stated that you are new and you learn new things every day.Did you not know before this incident that you shouldn't sign for stuff when you didn't give it? How did they teach documentation in nursing school?
