Can I become a nurse in California if I was convicted of child porn possession in the state?

Nurses Criminal

Published

Let's say I was convicted of the charge and served my sentence but have to register as a sex offender for life. Can I still be a nurse if I have recommendation from a psychologist or other health professionals as evidence of rehabilitation?

It's because I had posted on this website years ago after being kicked out of a clinical rotation and many of the responses I received were upsetting to me. I wanted to see how people would react to this post since this is a sensitive subject matter for a lot of people. I know it really isn't the place for this. I would delete the post.

So, this was some sort of social experiment? If so, what are your findings? If not, you should consider other productive ways of spending your time.

Agree. It's one tall tale after another. Probably some half truths buried in there

You might be on to something. Professors had noted that I was "two-faced" and "inconsistent with information." It was one concern of many. A little strange that they graduated me from their program in spite of that.

Why did they call you "two-faced'? That is quite concerning.

"Inconsistent with information" is an apt euphemism for deceitful considering the progression, or rather regression of the dialogue herein based on your retorts.

There was a concern that I was having issues in the clinical setting and that it may be related to my parents being from Iran. A professor had read about it and made the remark that I seemed two-faced because I had allegedly said that I didn't wish to get into other's personal space at clinicals but then claimed to not have that issue. He also said he thought it was a personal issue with me and not related to my ethnicity or cultural background. I discussed it with the program director and she said that she didn't agree with the language he used, but she told me she wouldn't address it since the professor was in the department of public health and not under her supervision.

I've been more consistent with information in this thread alone than most of the faculty I went to school with.

On a related note, I was running late to clinical one day and didn't leave my phone in my car as I was supposed to. My instructor asked me if I had my phone and I responded, "no. I mean, yes." She tried to text another instructor that I lied to her and that I "fib" but she accidentally sent the text message to me instead of my instructor. It wasn't the first time I caught them trying to talk about me behind my back. Of course I just forgot that I had my phone in my pocket and I didn't intend to "lie" to her.

Maybe they didn't give you any grace about it because you have a history of and have established yourself as being "inconsistent with information" based on your own report.

No, a little strange that you post weird tales on an anonymous online nurses group to get responses. I'm leaving this thread after this. But you do you...

Fair guess, but that clinical instructor never knew me and was a different faculty member from the ones who said I'm inconsistent or two-faced. She had no involvement with me from previous semesters and knew nothing about me. By the way, I didn't establish myself that way. Those faculty have said so many things about me that were false I could lose count. It wouldn't be appropriate to judge a student a certain way and hold them to a different standard or expectation anyway. Everyone should be treated fairly.

Why do you think they said those things about you? The thing about saying no to a direct question about the cellphone resolves the “inconsistent with information” part.
Do you think you came across as two-faced? Personally, what do you think that means? And what do you think they meant?

I guess they were being brash and weren’t concerned about how their choice of words can make me feel or look. I was having an argument with the professor who said I was two-faced and he was trying to discredit me. I was trying to argue that I wasn’t an Arab like another professor had said I was. “Two-faced” just feels like a more blunt way to call me inconsistent. It’s all a bit complicated and I don’t feel prepared to say everything about the situation on this forum. The cellphone thing was small potatoes, happened a year after I was called an Arab and two faced, and I don’t believe that incident had any connection to the name calling. It doesn’t prove I’m inconsistent because of how I responded to her question. I said “yes” after having a chance to think about it for one second. It’s a mistake anyone could have made and says nothing about my honesty or character.

You are right. I do not think it is a big deal to have the cellphone with you or in your bag during clinical, unless you are distracted from your clinical experience by it. Some of the nursing professors and clinical instructors are devout to arcane and outright unthinking methods, especially considering the relevance of technology in learning. Thankfully, most of the inflexible ones are retiring/retired. I'm not surprised that someone from this hemisphere with a narrowminded outlook of the world would think an Iranian is an Arab, rather than Persian. Correct me if I'm wrong. I have seen on multiple occasions Sikhs get misidentified as Muslims or Islamic. I find it quite distasteful. I empathize with your agony.
