Can a hospital retract their job offer

I was offered a new grad night shift position in writing at a Hospital in Maryland. I did all my requirements even a physical. Dring the physical the nurse decided that she thought something was wrong with my neck and I had to go see a doc about it. I had to pay out of pocket cost to go and see a doc when I made it clear that I was fine ( . The results came back that I was fine. I purchased my uniform and was getting ready to start orientation this Monday. I got a call from the nursing recruiter saying that management decided not to offer this position any longer. My start date was one month for the position and now all other positions are gone. What can I do I am at a lost. There was no reasonable explanation given except we no longer offer this position. I still have my uniform which I payed for. I signed all the paperwork included how much I would be payed etc ( would that amount to a contract

As the multiple other respondents have indicated, an offer of employment can definitely be rescinded. As unfortunate as this seems, the reality is that no potential employer owes a prospective employee a job.

Well, thank u for your opinions I just wish I knew what the reason was. I was told it was nothing I did because they had to do the same to others that they had recruited as well. I can only speculate and stressed myself out at this moment which will not do be any good. I am thankful that the nurse recruiter is trying to find me another position within the group. Take away lesson I will not stop looking for a job whether I am hired are not.

Perhaps they had to rescind multiple new grad offers and not just yours, if they said that they rescinded multiple offers. It may have nothing to do with you and more to do with staffing, budget, and census.

The reason may be simply that the job/position was eliminated. Nothing more nothing less.

Sorry about your troubles, but even in my Union hospital with a signed contract, there is a clause that allows the hospital to terminate employment within the first 90 days (probation period) without cause.

I hope you find a new job soon. Maybe you can use the scrubs at a future employer?

OP: They can not only retract any job offer but look you squarely in the face and say: "What Job Offer?" And then go teach a Sunday school class on the importance of always being honest in all things and practicing the "golden rule."

Caveat: The above tenets of behavior and good-will apply universally across the board; unless there's money involved. Then all bets are off, as in your case.

A while ago I had found myself in a similar situation with a job offer retraction. In my case the nurse recruiter did not even offer to send my info to other departments for consideration. She simply stated that the offer was rescinded and I'd be better off looking for an opportunity at another hospital. End of story.

A paperwork, background check and physical were not even initiated and no reason for retraction was ever given. As others commented, even a signed job offer can be vacated by the facility unless there's a clause and contractual obligations expressly written.

Accept it as a loss on their part and not yours. A better opportunity will present itself if you just keep looking. A uniform can be returned unless it was worn or had embroidery.

Been there before: it hurts! But it doesnt say anything about you, it says something about the employer. Eventually you will be glad you wont be working for them, but it will take time. Dont let their behavior determine your worth!

Yes they can. One of my classmates had a late test date and informed the HR. After many phone calls and promises of extending his start date, he managed to find an earlier test date. The day after he tested, HR called him an rescinded their offer in regard to lack of a license number. To add insult to injury, 24 hour after HR rescinded their offer, my friend's licensed got posted.

Yes, this happened to me for a nurse aid position. The recruiter said that there were budget cuts. I was bawling over the phone but it's not in my nature to be rude so I just tried my best to keep it together and remain polite.

THEN...I got a call back a few months later from the same recruiter offering me another job. She said "You were so polite when I called to rescind the job offer and I never forgot that." SERIOUSLY.

I worked as an aide for 6 months and was hired immediately into an RN position before I graduated from nursing school.

Moral of the story: be polite! This might not be the end of your story with this hospital.

I doubt it was the physical. Did they do a background, drug, and credit screening? Did they call references? You might want to think about that as well.

These things happen all the time. Return the scrubs you bought. Hopefully you kept the receipt. Your post comes off as you thing you should be compensated for the scrubs or you should be able to force them to hire you.

Welcome to the real world. I'm sorry this happened, but it's life. Life is not always fair and it can suck sometimes. It's how you respond the the adversities that help you become a stronger person.
