Can i ever become a nurse?

Published

12 years ago i knew i wanted to be a nurse and started the pre clinical phase but i screwed up and got a D in psychology at a cuny school (new york). Fast forward 12 years a husband and two children i wanted another shot at it but every school i look at says the D in psychology would prevent me from being a nurse. Is there any advice on what i can do or even perhaps an lpn program ,what schools are good?

I know for a fact that you can make a D in psychology and still be a nurse. I am still in my prereqs and it has happened to me,but look into a community college.

Then again I am looking into a KY nursing program. May different in your state.

I'm a little confused by what you're asking now. I did go and look at one of CUNY's nursing program's requirements, and yes, I think I understand what you're saying in that they will simply use the first Psych 100 grade. I wasn't able to find anything about the requirements needing to be within a certain number of years.

However, this is the kicker. Have you actually called and talked to somebody? Or are you getting all your information from CUNY's website? If you haven't talked to somebody, then call them.

And as for the second part of your question/statement, there are other schools in the New York City area. It will mean doing some leg work, but this is truly where Google is your friend.

Yes nonyvole i am currently enrolled in cuny and i spoke with my advisor and my liberal arts counselor and they both told me that cuny nursing programs wouldnt allow me in their program. I just disnt want my time or money to go to waste they asked me if i was interested in other programs. But im dead set on wanting to be a nurse and i think its unfortunate that just because of one grade i cant be want i want in life. So i was advised to find another school but im not sure where to begin

Start with Google, then your state's BON, then the CCNE and ACEN (Google those too).

1. Google will let you know what other programs are in the area;

2. State BON will let you know what programs are approved so you can sit for the NCLEX (test that allows one to become a licensed nurse);

3. CCNE and ACEN are accreditation a for community colleges and universities (respectfully) that have nursing programs that have active to create an optimal atmosphere dedicated to nursing theory and education; most employers in this market are looking for prospective employees that have graduated from such programs; as well as if you decide to further your education in this business, universities won't be hard pressed to have you repeat courses or scrutinize your previous education.

Hope this helps!

Speak to the advisors from the ACTUAL nursing programs, not a general advisor as it will help. You should be able to retake it but the old D will still factor into your GPA. look into other schools, maybe consider a private school with a good NCLEX passing rate. If not there are a few schools that offer LPN. There are so many schools in NYC that I'm sure you can find one that will work

Thanks you all for the advice i truly appreciate it

Honestly, a D in psychology, at least I would think, would be overlooked if you excelled in your sciences classes (i.e. A&P, Microbiology, Chemistry, etc. etc.)

I think it is an important pre-requisite for nursing but I don't think it holds as much merit as some other classes. You may have to retake it, but as long as you pass it the second time and have the grades for your science classes, you shouldn't have much of a disadvantage.

For being out of date, I don't know why they would hold that against you...

Google schools in your particular area and contact the Nursing program advisors. Ask them about the GPA, their position on retakes, and their NCLEX pass rate. Then decide if that's the school you want to go to. Don't be afraid to look out of your area too if need be for schools.

Congratulations! I'm happy I ran across your story it is inspirational. I made a few mistakes when I first started school but I really want to be nurse, its nice to hear. I hope your doing well in your program!!

When I first started this journey, I jumped in with both feet and wasn't completely prepared. Long story short, my kid got sick and I had to withdraw. Well I didn't but I thought I had to because my type A personality said that If I have perfect attendance and straight A's, the world would end. One year later, with a withdrawl (essentially a fail since I left so late in the semester) and a C in psych I retook the classes. They are all still there but I was admitted into the program because I went back and got an A in all of my classes. Talk to your advisor. I'm willing to bet that after all these years later, you can retake the class and start over :)

Did you complete a degree? From my understanding anything obtained without a degree drops off after 5 years. In your case it's a good thing.

I'm sorry, it just blows my mind that they would even factor in a 12 year old past grade if you took the course again and got a better grade. That's kind of "double jeopardy" isn't it? I could see if it was 2 or 3 years ago, but 12 years is a long time.
