Does any one out there know if anyone other than nurses can draw from ports/lines? Examples would be someone from the laboratory as in a phlebotomist or a Medical Laboratory Technologist?

I would assume that the MDs, PAs and their respective students could as well.

And nursing students if supervised - we were allowed to per hospital policy, at least where I did clinicals.

No. Just RNs.

Incorrect...At least in my state. I'm an LPN, and can draw from Central Lines, and flush as well.

In SC, RN's only can draw, flush or infuse medications on any central line, Subclavian, IJ, PICC,Hickman,Ports,. If the line has fluids already infusing, LPN may start Piggy-back to existing fluids. Can not hang blood or push medications, such as pain meds.

Look in the polices of the state boards in your state.

As many have stated, it varies by state and by facility. Our Nurse Practice Act in our state will allow an LPN to access a central line, however, the hospital where I work will not.

You can Google as well as I can. :)

Ouch... are we all feeling the love here???? :chair:

Anyway - at my hospital the techs on my floor are trained and do draw off central lines. The techs that float to our floor can not.

In Florida LPN's can draw from ports but we aren't allowed to access implanted lines (the name is blowing out of my mind right now).
