Can anyone other than nurses draw from lines?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Does any one out there know if anyone other than nurses can draw from ports/lines? Examples would be someone from the laboratory as in a phlebotomist or a Medical Laboratory Technologist?

Where is this stated? I just would like verification that this is some law or something that is inforced by the state!

You can Google as well as I can. :)

I already tried that before I posted the question. I can not get anything to come up. Thanks anyways!

Our CCT's are allowed to draw blood from our central lines & a-lines as long as the pt. has a VAMP in place.

I'd like to know the answer to this as well. I suppose it depends on the state. I've heard it said that the reason is not drawing the blood but flushing afterwards. Only an RN can flush a central line.

At my facility, LPNs can flush central lines, but only RNs can draw from them.

Google:

nurse practice draw central line [your state]

It varies.

I just googled it and it is only RN's.But check the nurse practice act in your state. I have worked in several states and they some are different. I worked in a rural hospital once, and they expected me to go above what I was licensed to do. When I called the state board, they said, yes it wasn't in the nurse practice act, but they make exceptions for the rural communities. Needless to say I did not stay there long at all. When in doubt, don't. No one else in the medical field is going to protect your license except you.

Good luck.
