Calling all nurses in NC and VA

Hi curlygurlrn......all of those places that you mentioned are nice places to live. I've been to them all, and love them all equally.

As for the hospitals there, I did not work in those cities, but I have a girlfriend who lived and worked at Baptist Univeristy Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC.....she loved it! As a matter of fact she went to college there.

I know at least in VA in the Richmond area that Medical College of VA, Henrico Doctor's Hospital, Chippenham, Johnston-Willis, and St. A+MAry's are some of the best hospitals around the Richmond area. In the Norfolk area, one of the best hospitals around there is Norfolk Sentara Hospital and Norfolk General Hospital. Have heard good things like cheerfuldoe said about NC hospitals, but don't know to much about them. If you want anymore info about the Richmond area just PM me and I'll let you know more in detail.

My wife and I are vacationing near Ashville, NC this October. Anyone here, familiar with this area, care to share their opinions about the the hospitals around Ashville?

I spent a fall vacation near Ashville last year and fell in love with the area. Actually, it was a small town about 15 miles north-west of Ashville. Loved the mountains!

In Norfolk there is Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. It has 600+ beds,is a teirtery care center.Also,next to Norfolk General is a peds hospital,Kings Daughters.There are several other hospitals in Norfolk.

Virginia Beach has several fine hospitals.It is a beautiful city to live in.

Hampton is a small city,only has one hospital.

Do you prefer mts. or ocean? Each state offers both. Va. is a commonwealth state, and that makes a lot of things sucky..(yes, I live there). Norhtern Va. has better payscales.. Va. Beach and Norfolk are kool IF you like cities (not for me...never find me anywhere NEAR Richmond!) N.C. is a really, REALLY nice state. Thank goodness I can walk to the state line in less than 5 minutes from my house! Pay is far better in N.C. (as compared to southwest Va., anyway). They have wonderful beaches and great ski-country in the Asheville area, Boone, etc. Asheville is FABULOUS ! Raleigh is nice and has Duke University Medical this and medical that.. they're excellent. But remember, the farther south you go, the muggier the climate. Guess that's why I prefer the mountains. I can go down off the mtn. when I want or need to, but enjoy the dailey living up here in the fresh, CLEAN air. You can see zillions of stars at night, and the water is still pure form the many mountain springs...Winston is ok.. lot of people I know from here drive there to work at Baptist or Forsythe Hosp... pay is supposed to be quite good, especially on wk.ends and if you do critical care. But, again, it gets hot and worse..MUGGY" in the summertime. Wilmington is a pretty kool, old historic town on the NC coast, about an hour and a half (maybe 2 hrs.?) no. of Myrtle Beach, S.C. Wilmington has some nice beaches, even further south, and Topsail Island. At least there if it's hot and humid, you've got the beach. I'm sure you can find some good info on the internet to help you decide, even about the hospitals. Happy hunting! Hope you find what you want !

I live about 2 hrs from Charlotte, nice city to visit but don't want to live there...crime rate very high, roads are messed up as far as traffic patterns are concerned. Winsto Salem is really nice, for the up and coming if you know what I mean, several people I know live and work there. Don't know much about Va. It is very hot in NC (Charlotte & Winston) I mean hot, sticky, muggy, you can't do much but stay on the beach or by the pool on those days...BEST OF LUCK TO YOU!!

I live in Asheville,NC . There are several hospitals around the area . The largest is Mission-St.Joe's , these were separate hospitals now combined into one corp. Mission has the larger ER . St.Joe's has a wonderful cardiac unit. Both are good places to work . I currently work at the VA hospital . I'm biased , but I feel this is the best. Love my job. All have good benefits. There are several smaller hospitals in the surrounding area. Pardee in Hendersonville , Park Ridge in Fletcher , Grace in Marion and Haywood Regional in Clyde. Don't know much about these , but haven't heard anything bad.

efiebke , Oct is a good time to visit . There should be lots of leaves left to see and it won't be as crowded as in Sept.

LOTS to do and see and partake in..hiking, rafting, skiing, wonderful outdoor festivals..breathtaking scenery. N.C. in general has become one of the top rated "white collar" job states in the nation, with a lot of job tranfers to this state, and new corporations and businesses being added all the time. And the

peolple are friendly!

Ashville is really starting to sound great. My husband and I will be visiting my family in NC in December and plan to take a trip up there. With a very limited amount of time, what are the major must-see things in order to soak in the most possible experience?

How is the nursing pay in Ashville? Is it hard to find day positions?

Virginia is beautiful but,being the ONLY 'Employment at Will State'; which means you can be fired for any reason or no reason at all...Asheville,Hendersonville,Jacksonville,Cherryville,Lake Lure,etc...excellent!

I would live in Asheville, NC! It is a very nice city...mountains all around which help make the city cooler than other NC cities further south in NC. :)
