How one unvaccinated child sparked Minnesota measles outbreak - CBS News. It isn't speculation that children are the highest risk to catch or spread vaccine preventable diseases that has always been true historically and today.

Children in this case should be protected from some of these "their bone headed parents" by mandating vaccines. Children all over are the U.S. Are not safe when one state allows lax vaccine requirements. That isn't an opinion that is a fact that can be found in news/case reports all the time on how these vaccine preventable diseases spread.

"Among the 110 California patients, 49 (45%) were unvaccinated; five (5%) had 1 dose of measles-containing vaccine, seven (6%) had 2 doses, one (1%) had 3 doses, 47 (43%) had unknown or undocumented vaccination status, and one (1%) had immunoglobulin G seropositivity documented, which indicates prior vaccination or measles infection at an undetermined time. If the parents want to make these nutty decisions for themselves that is fine, but don't make it for innocent children.

I have personally known two parents who lost children to whooping cough in the last three years. One was so stupid that she had another baby and do you think she vaccinated that one? Nope. Even losing a child didn't teach her anything...that is how extreme some views are. I had to cut off that friendship.

I believe that all public school children should be vaccinated.

However, if you've ever seen a life threatening reaction in an infant because of that vaccination, you might be more able to understand their resistance..

Almost no one will ever see a serious side effect to a vaccine (other than the small pox vaccine). These people that claim they have seen a serious reaction to a vaccine are usually seeing a coincidental occurrence of some other problem that occurred around the time of vaccination, and with serious reactions to vaccines being somewhere in the neighborhood of 1 to 1,000,000-10,000,000 or more it doesn't explain the majority of anti-vaccine propaganda.

In general I prefer that the government stay out of my personal life. However I am firmly in agreement that all school age child should be vaccinated against communicable disease. Still while we are at it all adults over 45 need to have their immune status checked as well. I had to have titers done for school last year and guess what? I had no active immunity for the measles even though I had the full series in childhood and a booster in college in the 80's. My insurance comp ran the titers for free as part of their well ness program. We should note that not all the victims of the latest measles outbreak were children - there were older adults who got sick as well.

Amen. I have a friend whose baby recently got her first MMR. She was posting all over Facebook asking for prayers about the baby's "terrible reaction" to the MMR. Baby cut four teeth together the same week and had a fever of 103, and was fussy. *facepalm*

What really lit my fuse was one of her other friends posting, "You know I'm here for you. This is what I do, heal vaccine injury!" It took everything I had not to call them both blithering idiots. I saw baby Sunday....she's perfectly fine. Mom told me about how her older twin sons reacted to the MMR as well, because they complained their legs hurt and laid on the couch for two days after getting it. I don't know how someone who's been a mother for almost 8 years doesn't realize the probability that they were playing on her fear and anxiety (they were preemies) and milking it for all it's worth. :rolleyes:

She's nice but she drives me a little nuts sometimes.

Plus pain at injection site, malaise, and even a fever are not considered adverse effects. They are expected known Side effects. Pain at injection site (no duh), Fever (inflammatory response to the vaccine which is the body's appropriate response as it mounts antibodies. Listlessness - also a know expected but not serious side effect. Now if baby had the shot and started having seizures or some such that's an adverse side effect.

Just a quick note to add on to what wtbcrna very wisely said:

Outpatients can be required to take their meds in the presence of personnel to ensure proper and complete treatment. Most states have no exemptions for religious or philosophical objections. Of those that do, CA for example does require the person to be quarantined.

Outrageous govt overreach? Does the pt have no right to refuse?

Well, their right to refuse stops short of putting others at risk. Public health trumps individual feelings, and the evidence supports vaccination (as it does the TB cocktail) as an effective public health measure.

They're on the Holistic Nursing forum. (rant: holistic doesn't mean anti EBP, but what do I know? I clearly drank the Kool Aid.) :sarcastic:

You cannot have a pet that has not been vaccinated againt Rabies, you cannot board your pet in a kennel, or take them to doggy day care, unless that have been vaccinated,
You can have a tantrum, get your big girl panties in a wad, and the kennel will not let them in if they have not been vaccinated.

Another good example of mandatory public health practice.

As far as I know, people who got measles in the recent outbreak who had confirmed vaccination histories all had not been vaccinated. If you are vaccinated, you are not going to get it

Forgive me if this was said already, but alongside the philosophically unvaccinated kids are the medically unvaccinated ones. They are the ones who need to be protected, not so much my fully vaccinated ones. I hate that little Sarah got measles because her mom was convinced the MMR causes the autism, but what about little Tim who got it from Sarah--he couldn't get vax'ed because he has a hx of a true adverse reaction to it?

It's not so simple as "if you're worried, just make sure your are vax'ed." (Not quoting you, but quoting a common argument against allowing nonmedical exemptions.)
